Default V40T4 - Driving Style - how best to pull away from the lights!

Hi,
whilst I'm happy with my (unmodified) '97 v40T4 and having fun with Chavs with their Corsas(!), I get beaten off the lights by people in Focus TDCi due to not being able to get traction!

I've got Eagle F1s all round but I still find it difficult to pull away quickly, without losing traction.

Whats the best way to get the most power onto the tarmac?

When pulling away in 1st I generally dont give it too much throttle and then change up to 2nd quite early (maybe around 20-25mph) and feed the power in... I find you have to back off when the engine's around its torque peak (2500-4500rpm) but can apply full power after that. Also, unlike most 16 valve Non turbo cars, you dont gain anything by redlining it, best place to change is probably around 6000rpm or slightly earlier.
Definitely takes some practice though! Especially when it starts torque steering all over the place....

Mines only a 2.0t but am not far off T4 power now but traction off the lights can be difficult especially in the wet,

As said about i go steady off in first and change gear early and then give it all its got in 2nd and just hold its torque steer best you can,

Hi Rooster,

You've got 17" arcadias alloys on yours with 215/45s havent you, did they help with traction much, compared with the standard tyres? I've been thinking about fitting some to mine if I can find any, for grip more than styling really...

Am I right in thinking that the only 4x4 volvos is s/v70 (apart from the xc90), and then it's not as powerfull as a T4 or T5?

I think the S60R and new shape V70R are four wheel drive, they've got 300bhp...

I had a sat of 16in cybers before the arcadias, there wasn't alot in it to be honest traction wise but the handling was transformed, i had a major problem with understeer with 16's on but its alot better with 17's, the rear end lets go first so its alot more controllable.

Ditch the useless traction control when its dry, you loose more time with it cutting power and having fits than if it spins up in first by which time your reaching for second anyway.
