Do you have any links to examples of genuine belts or pulleys failing within their service life?

The reason they are failing occasionally is cost cutting of the rollers and tensioners , just compare a tensioner from A volvo 850 and a 240 , get them in your hand and examine them ..They did and do last forever we wouldn't hesitate in just changing the cambelt and feel completely confident that the belts would last another 50000/96000 miles and for the next change . the tensioners were not even considered because they were Bullet proof . Do the same with the 2007 and later volvo ones , It is pretty obvious the later ones are thrown together and the big retaining washer peened over in the centre ...The bush or pivot wears , the peening fails and the big coil spring breaks on the version 1 from 2007 .They use that dull zinc plating seen on Ford parts for many years . Diesels are very harsh on rotating parts at low rpm because the crankshaft does not just turn it rotates in a series of violent jerks as each cylinder fires , accelerating and de-celerating 2 or 3 times a rev . I have had all sorts of ideas for improving Certain cars over the last 40 years , but i could not sleep at night taking money for them without them being tested to be fit for purpose , what would you do and how would you feel if a couple of engines with this device had the belt tangle and the engine was ruined ? .. I proved my Ideas over 100.000 miles on the road before i could recommend them . If you have proved that it saves the engine Apologies , and that is the way to sell and advertise them and well done for doing so , it is something Volvo should have done nearly 10 years ago .. Happy new year and good luck with any other ideas you come up with , that is how our older cars get better .That's all i want to say ...

I can't see how this can be tested and prove to fully work however I can see that it could save the can belt in the event of aux belt failure.
If belts and pulleys are not changed on time and they let go then I would say tough luck but as there is a number of premature failures then something like this is a good idea. If it does not work the it's 55 quid down the pan, if it does work then it has just saved your engine. |

I bought my kit in the full knowledge that it has not been 'approved' or tested but regardless the concept is sound and the kit is good quality. If a belt snapped and the kit didn't work then I'll live with that - at 55 quid it's a chance I'll take. It doesn't negate the need to follow the schedule and use OE parts.
The real issue is that Volvo don't recognise that it is an issue for 'out of warranty' owners who would like some comfort that if they follow the service schedule and there is a rare failure then we'd rather not be shelling out for a new engine.

You are spot on with that. Without doing a lot of destruction testing there is no way to prove they do or don't work.
I would stock this product, as long as it is clear that in the vent of premature belt failure this device is only to help protect the cam belt and some damage is still likely I dont see a problem |

Such a shame you aren't selling anymore Gints, if I ever had another D5 I would love to have another one!
I was one of the first orders for a belt guard for my XC70 and can testify it is a cracking piece of kit, a really well designed and made item. I sold the car before fitting the guard as it broke down and I'd had enough so I sold the guard to another forum member who as far as I'm aware is happy with it

it will be fine and you can sell on the v 70 or break it up for profit. hold on even better idea Element 888 should do this then he can have the profit seeing it was his idea. The forces mentioned are no where near strong enough to compromise the cover element 888 is selling its the small piece of aux belt that goes between the cam belt and pulley that slips the belt on the crank pulley screws the cam timing that stalls the belt strips the teeth and the belt is history. All it has to do is stop the bits of aux belt getting between the crank and cam belt. Last edited by AndrewBrown; Aug 23rd, 2017 at 11:14. |
