Default XC90 Gearbox stuck in park

Hi
Have had xc90 since sep 2005 and I now have a major problem that the automatic gearbox is getting stuck in park and you cannot change gear. Local and volvo garages can't help and say it needs to be recovered and brought in to be looked at. At a great cost no doubt!
It was happening intermittently but now seems to be stuck permanently so is sitting uselessly on the drive.
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but you are putting your foot on the brake pedal when trying to move the gear lever.

If you are doing this it may be that the safefty cut-out switch between the brake pedal and the gearbox has an intermittant fault.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yes definitely putting foot on the brake but it's not making any difference.

Susana,
Make sure that the brake lamps are working , listen for a click noise from the shift housing when pressing the brake pedal , also wiggle the shifter gently while doing so .
Its possible that something sticky as spilt in to the housing causing the mechanism to stick.
