Default Volvo XC90 timing belt

Hi all, my retired mechanic friend who does a few jobs for me, asked me if I could find out if any special tools are required or anything different to look out for when changing a 2004 XC90 TD timing belt. Any info. would be much appreciated.

Default Belt change

No special tools required but use thread lock on crank pulley main nut and the four bolts and tensioner bolt. (should be replaced with new).
Instuctions attached are for V70 but same engine (D5) and in PDF format (Adobe Reader required freebie on the net)

Paul.

There are some points worth pointing out on this job .

Firstly the lower crank pulley has to be removed unlike the petrol version as the belt is wider and wont bend around the pulley . So you have to remove the 4 bolts and large central nut . This means that new bolts and nut MUST be used and torqued up properly , this is vital on a diesel which suffers severe vibration in the crank pulley area when idling . . The main nut MUST be tightened to 300 nm which is tight! this is where you need the special tool to conterhold the crank pulley unless you can devise a method to hold solidly 300+ nm !
The four new bolts must be torqued to 35nm then a further 50 degrees .
The tensioner must be adjusted anti-clockwise so the pointer points to the centre of the two marks at 20 C .

If you do it this way you wont have any problems . Bodge it and it can cost dearly .. no loctite is recommended for the nut , remember it has to be undone again at some point . If you do it to 300 nm there will be no problem .
