Clutch sticking down!!!
Hi All
I have 2014 V60 D3, very randomly and intermittent my clutch sticks down and won't come back up, i have to put my foot behind it and pull it back!!! Like i say this only happens every now and again. I have been told it could be the slave cylinder, if so is this a big job and anyone a rough guess on cost at a garage. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks |

Sounds like slave, did you notice change in a brake fluid level? It's a gearbox removal job, can cost as much as clutch replacement. Depends on the mileage it may be worth doing clutch at the same time

I've recently been going through the exact same issue with my 2016 XC60 D4 AWD (5 cylinder).
It was at its worst when on the motorway for several hours of driving and I had about an inch of travel on the clutch. I could move the pedal by hand (well ... foot) but it would stick down again. However it was less of a problem when the clutch was used often, like on short stop-start journeys. After being messed about by the original garage they agreed to cover it under warranty, so the master cylinder was replaced. It definitely felt better on the drive back home (almost like it hadn't been fully disengaging the clutch), but unfortunately after a few weeks the problem started to reappear. It's now going back in for a slave cylinder change, so I'm paying for the clutch and DMF to be changed at the same time. Although covered under warranty, I was quoted about £800 by the independent gearbox specialist for the work (Rybrook Warrington quoted £1500!). I think the master cylinder would have been about £240, and I'm paying £470+VAT for a new clutch and DMF. Oh, and a leak is a good indication of a problem but the issue can be due to internal seal failures, so you won't always see a loss of fluid.

Not an uncommon issue on later P3 cars with manual gearbox - usually faulty slave cylinder. My 2017MY XC60 had it replaced under warranty after 48k.

I had this exact same problem with the clutch sticking and the problem was easily solved by flushing the brake fluid thouroughly.
The problem was caused by dirt in the brake/clutch fluid lines. The cause of the dirt in the fluid was that the fluid was never changed although brake fluid should be changed every 2 years. The maintenance instructions are very clear. After brakepads replacement dirt from the fluid lines is pushed back in to the fluid container and gets suctioned by the clutch cylinder and plugs the entrance. And if you keep holding down you clutch pedal and there is some pressure loss the pedal ends completely on the floor. Letting the pedal coming up completely and pumping a few times refills the fluid line to the main cylinder again until it happens again because of the dirt in the fluid reservoir. Flushing the brake/clutch fluid lines thouroughly and repeatedly solves the problem. Afterwards I was told the although maintenance instructions clearly stipulate that brake fluid should be changed every 2 years the service station only do that on explicit order by the client. |
