Smile 740 Clutch

Hi, does anyone have a ball-park figure as to a reasonable price to pay to replace a clutch on a 1990 745 GLE Estate? (Parts and labour) Thanks, Mark

Parts will be about £100 for half decent ones (that's what I paid for a LUK clutch from the local factor). Labour is going to expensive, it's a gearbox or engine out job. I did it over a couple of days with a friend to save the cash, it was hard work but we managed it having never done it before. At a garage it's probably going to be at least four hours labour.

While it's out, do the rear main seal at the same time. It's a cheap part but it's hard to get to. And since you're there anyway...

As said depending on quality of clutch around £100 for parts. I paid £200 plus vat at my local garage for my old 940 couple of years ago. They charge around £40 per hour labour. The mechanics there like rear wheel drive cars as there easy to work on and generally with Volvo trouble free. Have done a good few myself but its not easy with drive on car ramps but its possible. The gearbox is heavier than it looks and tends to roll around a bit. Its a lot easier and quicker on proper garage lifts. I agree with the seal replacement and get them to check the condition of the flywheel etc while there at it.

Just a thought here - is the question to help decide whether to keep the car?

There's probably a few members in your area that have the tools and knowledge to do the job and would possibly do it cheaply for you in the spirit of keeping another on the road. Alternatively they may be interested in buying it and doing it themselves.
