BTW the resistance for the Lock up solenoid (SLU) should be 5.0 to 5.6 ohms.

The 4 gearbox wiring connectors are near the air filter.

You may wish to check the solenoid resistance from the connector to see if you actually need to go into the gearbox solenoid chamber.

Some info here:

Only comments are:

I would think it would be worth investigating to see if there is just a wiring fault to the LU solenoid. You just need to remove the solenoid cover on the front of the gaerbox for access.
It won't be much work compared to the gearbox swap and could be a virually zero cost fix.

If you can get a 'new' box for a reasonable cost you have the option of keeping it as a spare if you can fix the existing box.

If you do fit a 'new' box you may need to get the dealer to do the adaptation routine.

a big thanks to chris for all help on this. after spending a whole day yesterday on internet and ohone, i came accross something interesting. the car i bought off ebay from the chap i bought it off wasent telling the whole truth?? i came accross another website he had posted on, it was a forum you ask help in solving problems with cars. not this one. originally his gearbox went into limp mode, he the bought a dodgy code reader and it came up as needing a new gearbox???? he then went to a scrapyard and purchaced another said gearbox. he then got his local garage to fit gearbox. he then drove away and after i mile went into limp mode again. he then went back to the garage to complain, but they said we dident give a garantee on the box only on our work. he then booked it into volvo who extracted the same code as came up on my code reader. they told him he needed a new box but they dont fix only supply at £3700 al in. they then said did you get the box from a turbo model. he dident know?? so he decided to get rid of saying he knew nothing about cars and dident have funds to sort out. i phoned my volvo dealer and gave the gearbox number thats in the car, 55-50sn 9480901 they then checked it with the car registration, and said its got the wrong box fitted it should be 55-50sn9480902 one mumber out. no wonder it wouldent run. so ill start stripping out the old box, and wait till i find a desent one with the right code numbers.

Well you learn some things about folk.

I still think you may be able to get the thing working with the present box.

The differences in the two gearboxes is probably only final drive ratio, which may not be a big issue.

I would persue having a look at the wiring to the LU solenoid if you followed the links I gave earlier you should have the wiring diagrams and the location of the solenoid within the valve chamber.

A multimeter is quite cheap if you don't already have one.

I'd suggest there is little to lose by trying to fix the existing one.

If you manage to fix it and still want to change the box then you will have a saleable secondhand box.

Hmm, it may not be a perfect fit but the fault code is for an electrical connection to the LU solenoid.

If the code was for 'incorrect gear ratio' or similar I'd think they have a point.

You can check the electrical circuit resistance to the LU solenoid from the wiring conector by the air filter in a few minutes using the wiring diagrams and a multimeter.
You could even power the solenoid from a battery and listen for clicking in the box. This does not require opening the gearbox.

If these things test out OK I'd check the wiring from the ECU to the gearbox.

I would think some DIY time spent investigating would be worthwhile.

hope this helps

p.s comma asw oil is the same gearbox oil i paid £7 a litre
is this the top engine mount? and bottom stabiliser, is that it. going to look into this tomorow.
