Default Single DIN Aftermarket Radio Fitting

I have just removed my VOLVO double DIN unit and tried to replace it with a single DIN head unit with a pocket underneath.

The pocket is a single DIN size (from a VW I believe) and fits well but the aftermarket Blaupunkt head unit is only loosely laid in position because the mounting cage is too big for the aperture.

No matter how I bent or squeezed the cage it was just too wide for the aperture and when I finally got it in then the radio would not go in because of the distortion of the cage.

My question is, is there a special double to single cage necessary or do I have to cut something out of the centre console, or is it something simple like a double DIN mounting cage still in there that I have to remove?

I thought it would be a straight forward job of double unit out and single unit and pocket straight swap. No such luck and every job on this car seems to cause grief, unlike my trusty 740!

i fitted a JVC single din , not a problem
Cage went in, bent the retaining lugs where appropriate, slipped the radio in sweet as
Then i fitted the Gen volvo single din (self emptying as well !! ) pocket.
that Really locked the cage/radio in , due to having two lugs on the top edge that stick up enough to catch the lower edge of the single cage.

Radio on top, volvo pocket on the bottom.
if your doing it the other way over, and without a gen volvo pocket,,,might explain it

Default Still struggling with fitting radio!

andy, No, I am (trying) to fit it the same way round as you with the radio on top.

It is as if the aperture is not wide enough for the single DIN cage or the the double DIN has rounded corners whereas the cage has square.

I can, with great effort, get the cage in but then it is so out of shape it will not take the radio.

The pocket below is no problem and fits fine, just as I expected the radio to.

Anyone else had this problem?

Have I done this right? The original double DIN unit comes out and there is no cage or fittings to remove before putting the single DIN cage in?
