New owner with a few questions!
Hi all,
I’m the happy owner of a 2011 XC70 D5 AWD SE Lux, and am really pleased so far, it being my first jump into Volvo ownership. Still getting used to the car’s infotainment system, I’m hoping you guys will be able to help answer a few questions! Firstly, I have the car set to auto lock when driving away, however it seems to deadlock all but the driver’s door, so when we stop, only I can get out and no other passengers can unless I unlock the car using the key or the switch on the door; is this normal? I’ve never seen this in a car before, and it doesn’t feel right. It has the facelift dash with the inbuilt screen, and the dealer updated to the latest maps (and I guess software, as it had never been updated when I test drove it); can you store addresses, as I can’t seem to find a way to do this? Is there an easy way to cancel route guidance, rather than having to drill own into itinerary, edit route, cancel? That seems very long-winded, especially after coming from recent use of BMW idrive & Mercedes COMAND! Now this could just be me, but the stereo, and especially the iPod USB input sounds a bit quiet... My previous Merc had the amazing Harman/Kardon system, and I’m pleasantly surprised at how good the standard system in the XC is, but I seem to be running it close to full tilt! What bulbs are used in the active bending (utterly brilliant!) xenon lights? One’s a slightly different colour and they’re not as bright as I’ve experienced with xenons before, so guess they’re on their way out. The manual says they need to be replaced by a dealer...erm, no, I’m sure I can do that myself! It’s fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Verde All-Seasons, and they’re all in excellent condition, but does anybody have any other recommendations? I used to use Michelin Cross Climates on my old 5 Series in the winter, and was very pleased with them. Has anybody tried the SUV version on the XC70? And finally, it’s on 93k with full main dealer history, the previous owner bought it when it was only 5 months old, and the annual mileage has been pretty consistent over the years. It’s a bit tatty (in my mind, not my girlfriend’s - “it’s a used car!”) has had some paint, but looks straight and honest, with no evidence of towbar being fitted, and the diamond cut alloys are corroded, but hardly kerbed, so it looks like it’s just been used as a very competent tool by the previous owner. The Volvo independent I bought it from has just serviced it, along with replacing trailing arm bushes, discs & pads, and, after I took it back due to the steering wheel rocking of it’s own accord when off-centre (which seems to be a ‘known’ issue), they replaced the power steering pump, reservoir & rack! As far as I’m aware, all the parts listed above are genuine Volvo. I know the timing belt will be due at the next service, but is there anything else I should be looking out for at this age/mileage? I’ve always been a preventative maintenance person, so will get interim oil changes done as I do a mix of city and motorway driving, and whether it’s worth it or not, I always run our cars on BP Ultimate. Many thanks in advance, Nick Last edited by Cubbington; Dec 3rd, 2017 at 08:49. |

Hi Ruby,
Many thanks, and that’s how I’d expect the locks to work, but unfortunately not, when you pull the handle, the lock button goes up and pulls back down - I checked this morning and all three passenger doors do this, so it’s definitely deadlocking... With regards to the satnav, I found that option, and it just pauses, rather than cancels the guidance on mine. I did find how to save addresses, and also how easy it is to change the headlight bulbs, identifying the bulbs as D1S. Thanks, Nick |

I doubt this is the answer, but in my menu (2008) I can set it so that first unlock is driver's door only. This option is intended for the driver when outside the car using the keyfob to unlock - I'm just wondering if you have this selected, maybe the menu isn't smart enough to override it when it applies deadlocks when driving ? (I'm sure it is smart - it's Swedish after all !)

Deadlocks should never be enabled when driving, if you by deadlocks mean that you can't open at all from inside. That's just for theft protection, making it difficult to open the door even if you smash the window.
But if the deadlocks are on when driving, they may prevent you from getting out if you have an accident and the car is on fire, or similar. I never set my car to lock when driving, but if I do lock it anyway, it's a double action of the door handle on the inside to first unlock, then open. You can use voice command and say "Cancel navigation", or you can press the NAV key, which gives you a short cut menu, where one option is to cancel navigation. Now this is if you have Sensus, which should in turn imply that the car is of model year 2012, not 2011. But it can still be build year 2011. The software must also be updated from the original, or the NAV button will not work like that. The interior should look like this, if it's Sensus. |

When the doors auto-lock, they do indeed put the deadlocks on such that only the drivers door car be opened from the inside using the 'double pull' method. I've read on the forum that in the event of an accident, the deadlocks will automatically be disabled / unlocked such that the occupants can get out via inside or outside door handle.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies, and while I agree that the deadlocking seems a bit unsafe, if it's normal for these cars, no need to worry about it. @ apersson850, thanks for the tips on the nav, which is the 2012 Sensus type - mine seems to be semi-facelift with the new style nav but the old style gear selector. I've not used the voice command yet, but will try that tomorrow, along with checking the popup menu when pressing the NAV button to find the cancel guidance. I've stored a few favourites, and sad I know, but I like the way they show up on the screen! Thanks, Nick |

The cancel guidance option is in that little sub-menu, thank you! Now just got to find that annoying dull rattle at motorway speeds...doing some research I'm hoping it's not broken dashboard bolts/mounts, as it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side dash/front door, but it's so hard to place, and I had a colleague in the car yesterday who was trying to find it, but couldn't place it either; the closest he could come to was somewhere in the dash or the floor! Cheers, Nick |

The rattle sounds like front suspension units . At 93k they are well on their way and due for renewal . They will still pass a bounce test etc with no leaks but once removed from the car they were it was obvious they were shot. If the knock /rattle happens over gentle bumps or slight uneven ground then suspension legs /shocks are usually the culprits. while your at it change the top mounts as these can wear and rattle . If you haven't had the car long ask the dealer to contribute or do the job .
