Lexus LS400 1UZ 4.0 V8 transplant - 250bhp and enough torque to tow a house on holiday, never mind pull the house down! Set the exhaust up to be quiet and you'd have a real sleepr with no BOV noises to hint at what might be lurking under the bonnet.

Similar but i'd apply the KISS principle. Unless you're using it for track/drift days, there's no real need for the turbo on the road. Even in the donor vehicle it's capable of propelling it to 60 in under 8 seconds and a top whack around 150mph and the donor vehicle is nearer 2T than 1.5T like the Volvo.

I think that pretty much covers the spectrum we're looking for!
But seriously, the idea is it's a keeper that can grow with him - and from what I can tell, one of the attractions of a 240 for younger people is that it's capable of being made to work at lots of levels. That said, my hope is he draws the line at getting the most he can from a more-or-less standard setup, silly insurance prices allowing for any modifications.
But for now, we just want one that he can learn the basics on, and drive safely, for sure!

Hi Chris, not sure if you would be interested but I have two 1998 S70 tdi. one has been parked up for two years & the other i run nearly everyday. the mot runs out on this one in April 20. I am going to be having a tidy up & they will both be going. it will be a shame to just scrap them :-(
I get 40+ mpg from this car & it has 213,000miles on the clock

Thanks s70tdinut - I really like the S70s, especially the convertibles, but we're totally committed to a 240! I hope they don't end up scrapped...

Here's one for anyone that knows, and that might open up options for us - given that a cat reduces performance, can you fit an aftermarket cat that fulfils legal requirements and isn't a 'modification' for insurance purposes, that doesn't reduce performance? He's been looking at ads for 'performance cats' but we don't know how much, if any, difference it makes to power reduction.

You can Chris but it's usually a trade-off between performance and lifetime. The improved performance with the catalytic converter precious metals means there aren't as many of them in the cat to start with (less rstriction that way) so it doesn't take as long for the cat to become sooted up and inoperable.

I have revived catalytic converters by soaking them overnight in a large tank filled with hot water and half a dozen dishwasher tablets, giving it a gentle shake every so often, then rinsing both ways through with the garden hose before standing up to dry.
Last time was after a Lambda sensor failed during the emissions test and the CO started climbing as the ECU kept adding fuel to get the Lambda to respond! Of course, it didn't (when Lambda sensors die, the output is 0V and that signifies lean mix to the ECU) so the ECU kept increasing the mixture until it threw a fault light.

By then (about an hour later) and the journey home, the car would have been full of unburnt fuel so after ordering a new pair of Lambdas, i whipped the cat off and gave it a bath as described.

Once the new Lambdas arrived and were duly fitted along with the now "Lemon-Fresh" cat, i presented the car for retest.

"Nothing wrong with those emissions!...............(muttering) Why can i smell lemons?"

0.00% on the CO so it had definitely "cleaned" up its act!

Fairly sure the same procedure could be applied to a "performance cat" but if you get a pre-92 car, you can simply delete the cat.
