Agree there. I once had a Volks Wagon for a year. It really was a Wagon and was in the garage being fixed more than I drove it!

For 7 years the car has passed with no issue, yet this year failed catastrophically

Broken front coil spring
Leaking damper
Emissions problem
Front brake pads and discs
Rear brake pads and discs
Handbrake adjustment
Headlights incorrectly aligned
Steering end float
Insecure bonnet latch
Horn in/op not loud enough
Engine mounting
Defective insecure exhaust
Wiper blades

That is quite a list for a car that is hardly used, and has passed perfectly each year - year on year....!! So I decided to scrap it. Then I looked at it, and tbh the car looks absolutely mint. So I got it fixed. A grand later and it still lives.

Regards

Least she's still running. Big failure list though!

Ouch, that's even worse than our old faithful '00 Focus got last week, and we've made the decision to get rid of it.

Although that said, it didn't pass the last 7 MOTs so you've got to take that into consideration, as well as the fact that all of those failures are things that are unlikely to fail again for many years.

It is only when underbody corrosion starts appearing you are fighting a losing battle.

I can't say I have either, although I've seen just about every other possible fail!! The joys of owning/running 10+ year old cars...

It worked before the mot, but sounded like it was in a bucket of water!

I was taken aback and surprised, considering it was fine the year before, to suddenly have loads wrong.Steering and suspension was the main shock. How does suspension break? Potholes? Fair enough I did know about the brakes needing doing a long while back, but as not many miles were clocked up, I didn't bother until the last minute. What I always do prior to an MOT is take the car down the motorway in a low gear so it revs high so as to clean out any crud, especially with it standing for long periods. Didn't bother this time, and when it was re mot's emissions were fine. In fact I am pleased I didn't considering the springs were bust.
