Hi PNuT, Thanks yet again for your time and trouble. When I said "changed everything" it was a sweeping statement. I Should have said the ECU and other cubed plug-ins were swapped over [ forgive technical terminology ]
The engines look very similar. When comparing should I totally disregard the engine bay and concentrate on the block itself and parts coming from it.
I ask because on my engine the power steering top-up tank is mounted at the front beside and to the left of the exhaust manifold. That being the 1998 engine. Thanks jack

The first image has a distributor & throttle cable which is how your engine would have been originally as the later set up that doesn't have those two items didn't appear until late 1998 on 99 model year cars....

they are the two indicators as to which engine you may now have!

OK, I have no idea why you have two o2 sensors then!

The emission control wiring for a 99MY car is on page 126 showing only 1 sensor 7/15 & the later denso system has two sensors but also an electronic throttle....

Hi PNuT, thanks very much for the link. I think my only course of action is to return the car to the guys who swapped the engine. It comes down to engine running rich with 1 co2 censor and lean with 2 sensors. Taking it to a main dealer will cost more than the car is worth and unfortunately there are no Volvo specialists anywhere near to me.
Thank you once again for all your time and trouble it is very much appreciated. regards jack.
