Thanks for all of this - much appreciated!

So.. getting to the business end of this and looking at a number of cars this weekend..

My criteria is:

- 10k budget.
- 2010 min plate.
- under 100k miles.
- Automatic.
- FSH with invoices so I can see what work has been done & what parts have bene replaced etc
- Private or Trade (I know there will be a premium for trade).

Am also checking the DVLA for info on MOTs - particularly the advisories on the last MOT (one chap told me his car was in tip top condition with no work needed - MOT doc from 3 weeks ago said it needed bushes on FS replaced and front discs replaced.. he was silent when I mentioned this to him).

Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Many thanks for all you assistance!

so assuming approx 5k depreciation over 4 years, meaning a resale of approx 10k..

to me that seems pretty good - assuming no gremlins appear when the car comes out of the warranty period...
I doubt it will be worth 10k at ten years old. Maybe if you do hardly any miles and maintain a FVSH. Even then I would say more like 7 - 8k.

It could be manufactured early 2012. It is not unusual for cars to be registered six months after they leave the production line. End of the day it doesn't really matter. The car was unused until September 2012, just travelling around on a car transporter and a boat.

A long lead time between manufacture and registration isn't unusual in the car industry in general but it's very unusual with Volvos.
They don't really have tons of excess unsold units sitting in compounds.

Just be warned even with full history the XC90's can be expensive vehicles to run,

You don't say what you have currently but they are quiet heavy on tyres brakes and bushes and general consensus on here seems to be genuine only unless you want to buy twice,

Mine showed six months between manufacture and registration. Perhaps not as rare as we might think, especially on niche models.
