A recent rattle i had from the rear on my 2003 V70 d5 turned out to be a broken coil spring. i got both springs replaced by a local indy. -- There is a designation plate in the engine bay that has the coil spring code No. on it.

As previously mentioned, could be the brakes.

I've just had a very similar rattle (coming from the rear) fixed on my V70 - a rattle noise (rather than a knocking sound or anything else that sounded "load bearing") occurring mainly over speed humps/pot holes.

I couldn't figure it out myself, was driving me mad, so I asked my local indy to sort out. When I dropped car off they said it was probably the exhaust. They found & fixed the problem & told me it was the clips on the brakes. I didn't pay much attention to what what he said... I just assumed he was referring to the retaining spring. Must have been any easy fix as there was no charge (or parts need to fix).

I sorted my rear rattle recenty. It was the heat shield above the rear box. The bolt had rusted away from the body and the shield was rattling freely when going over bumps.

Don't forget to look at the spare tire. Sounds crazy and stupid I know.
Every time I went over a bump I heard a thumping noise. Thought it was bad rear shocks. I looked at the spare tire holder and it was broken. I got a new screw holder. Cheap plastic unfortunately. No noise.
Hope you can get it fixed.
