Default OBDII on 2001 v70

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been covered before but I have had a good search arround and cant really find anything.

I'd like to pick up an OBDII reader that I can read any fault codes etc but also get engine information as I have a laptop and touchscreen in my car (I like toys :P).

Would something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OBD-II-OBD2-AU...3%3A1|294%3A50

do the job well? sorry for the long link! I know its quite cheap but I'd rather not nuy it if its not going to work!

Thanks in advance
Tom

Which engine do you have?

Basicaly petrol engined vehicles supplied after Jan 2001 must be EOBD (OBDII) compliant, diesels did not have to be until 2004/5.

Volvo moved from ISO 9141 hardware layer to CAN for OBDII diagnostics in 2004.

The car is OBDII compliant, using the ISO 9141 hardware layer.

So any OBDII code reader that uses this will do.

Note this will be engine and limited auto gearbox diagnostics only.
If you want a code reader for all the systems in the car I'd suggest the PPC diagnostic reader is the most useful DIY solution.

Possibly, if pending codes are suported by the reader.

Note the PPC reader will display Volvo diagnostic codes which are far more informative than generic OBDII codes.

I have been looking at Gendan ELM327 and it seems that pending codes are supported as stated on their software pages but I dont want to spend the money to buy the software. Hoping I can buy their interface and use freeware to read pending codes.

Do you think this will work?

Thanks again for all oyur help

I should think so, the ELM interfaces are 'standard' and seem to be well suported with freeware. Don't know if any freeware supports pending codes.
