I had my car serviced at a garage (not volvo) and when the car was dropped off i was told that when the oil change was done the car was started up to get the level and when he checked the dipstick the new oil was as black as the ace of spades instantly he told me that it needed engine flushing so guess where my car is going back to monday !!!!!!!!!

If your car is a diesel the oil will be very black and residues left in the engine will stain the new oil black imediatley, using an engine flush will not be of much benefit.
If however your car is a petrol yes it would be of benefit as it would suggest the pre-change oil residue had become thick and then mixed with the new oil hence the imediate colour change. A word of caution, if your mileage is high it is not un-heard of for flushing to cause oil weeps, a safe option would be to use a cheap oil warm it up over 50 gentle miles and then change it for some good stuff including a new filter. Cheers, Pip

It's your choice it may help but personally I would be surprised if it did, i've never been a fan of flushing with additives, such flushing agents were new when I was schooled and i'm still to be convinced, used diesel oil tends to look bad when dropped even after a short mileage.
I used to change the oil on my frenchie work diesel van every six thousand and on draining it allways looked like jet black dish water with brown froth and lumps! but it still went on to do 260,000 hard thrashed miles with no dramas at all, I only sold it cause I use carriers now. Cheers, Pip

Are some types of diesel engine oil not 'black' looking anyway, as opposed to the usual 'amber/golden' coloured stuff???

If he started the car to get the level he must have put the new filter on, but he told you he put the old filter back on, seems odd , why bother. I hope he is not thinking of flushing, adding new oil and then refitting a filter contaminated with dirty oil.
All seems a bit odd to me. Keith... |
