That plate is replaced by one of the sensors on a F.I. engine.

Might you be referring to the petcock on the right side of the block? When I flushed my cooling system I removed the petcock to the rear of the oil filter and blew in the hole with compressed air and all manner of crud was dislodged. Give it a try and see what happens. You'll then need to flush the block with water.

Thanks all for replies. I found what I was looking for by surfing back through old forum discussions. I think that I had my wires crossed. The reference is to the long tube by Ron Kwas. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...ht=B18+cooling #8

Arcturus;

By "opening up water passages in B18/20" do you mean opening the supply holes of the Coolant Distribution Pipe within the Cyl Head, as covered here: http://www.sw-em.com/Coolant_Distrib...Pipe_Notes.htm
...repeating...my advice is NOT to undertake this work to improve a hot running motor, before you have performed a major and thorough Cooling System cleaning and flush!

Elaborating on Derek's info...the Diamond shaped Block-off plate on the side of the Cyl Head is used for the Coolant plumbing to the Oil/Coolant heat-exchanger on non-injected vehicles (like the P1800), and this location (and hole to hole spacing) was enlarged on later injected vehicle Cyl Heads, to mount the Aux Air Valve.

This topic was discussed here some time ago, so depending on search criteria, and how long one looks, you might be able to find it again, or the member who wrestled around with this issue (before we figured it out) might chime in.

Cheers

Edit; Looks like you found thread for CDP.

Thanks Ron. The engine isn't overheating (boiling) but the gauge tem'p' goes up when I'm in traffic or going slow so I switch the electric fan. Goes down once I'm on the move. I'm not really worried, after all the temp' outside was over 30c. I'm just trying to increase my knowledge base
