Default o/drive

I have dismantled d type overdrives, though not necessarily assembled them again!! It is my opinion that the control valve returns surplus oil to the sump, the sump being the external casing. The bearings are within the same casing which require lubrication.
Canley classics suggest never using gear oils as these oils contaminate the clutch. They also add to watch for black particles in any drained oil or filter. The black particles are from the clutch.Surely if the clutch is dry and operates in a dry oil free compartment, the fibres from a dry clutch would not end up in the oil or filter.
Again this is purely my opinion.

Default Eh?

The whole thing is full of oil up to the level plug. The cone clutches run covered in oil hence why Molyslip-type additives will mess up overdrive operation.
Attached photo shows that the clutches are in the same chamber as everything else. Material used on the friction surfaces is not the same as used for dry clutches, it's more like that used in automatic gearboxes and limited slip differentials.

Thanks for all your interesting posts, I know a lot more about OD gearboxes.

I guess I got it wrong, my gearbox is an M40 without OD.
Can anyone advise on my original question, i.e. what oil to get? Any advice/recommendations on good brands for oil for gearbox and diff?
