From my PDR days, most cars head linings can be removed by removing all the plastic trims and any roof clips, some maybe glued over most, some in just small sections, once youve removed all the trim and other small clips/bungs, any glue (quite strong rubbery stuff) can then be heated up with a heat gun or hair dryer whilst using a thin plastic item such as say a hard spachelor, there are special glue knives but i fear you may cause damage to the roof if youve never done it before. must keep anything used flush too the roof, dont use just a corner of the tool used. Also, be careful NOT to cut the roof bars glue by mistake. Also dont get heat gun too close to the paint too long, keep moving the gun away from the paint and check it every few seconds, once its too hot to keep ya hand on it, it will be ready to cut away, much hotter and you will scorch the laquer.

My advice to you would be take it to get it pro cleaned in situ at a valeters or they come to you, you need it wet vac'ing, else you will face one of a few main issues if not all, creasing it, tearing it, over wetting it.

OR, do what i would do, buy a few bottles of febreez for fabric or that foam for carpets.

Some also have sound deadening in between the lining and the roof, it could be this thats stinking, harder to dry out, thats likely the cause if there is no stain on the lining....

Yes, it can be done.
VIDA list the instructions for removing the headlining without disturbing the outer fabric roof and presumably without upsetting any of the roof calibration. Parts for Volvo also sell the headlining separately to the fabric roof. Reading through VIDA it is quite a big fiddly job, but follow the instructions and it should be straight forward. My copy of VIDA does not have a print facility and I'm not sure if screen shots will be successful, but I will have a look at it later and see if it will work.

Hopefully these instructions will help. The only difference you might find: depending on the age of car you will either have a zipper round the rear window or velcro to attach the headlining.
