Default Disappointing MPG

I have owned my 08 V70 D5 since april last year and covered 400 miles a week, as i have done in the previous 5 diesel cars since 2010.
I keep records and cover the same trips and mileage in the same patterns through out mainly 200 miles of motorway every sunday, with the rest of of the trips 50/50 motorway and town.

The D5 is the worst on juice by a mile

2010 civic 2.2 CDTi 47mpg avg best 54
2002 Bmw 530d 38avg 44 best
2007 BMW 330d coupe 46avg 53 best
2013 Bmw 330d 48mpg avg 53 best
2015 BMW 520d 44avg 52 best.

I do like my volvo, he suits our retired life and comfy motorway trips coupled to low purchase and easy maintainence.
2008 Ph3 V70 D5 37 avg 46 best once on a trip to scotland.

Same trips same drivers.

I feel from experience of the miles ive done that it should be better

80k miles currently
Oil and filter in last 5k its on 10k changes in my tenure
Fuel filter 19k ago
Air Filter 19k ago but it is very clean inspected today
New coolant today and live data says 88 temp at 73 mph cruise
New tyres 16k ago
All runs are two up and approx 30 kilos luggage.

Now in a few weeks i have a run to Essex from Leeds for a weekend, saturday traffic 73mph in all my other oil burners this was an easy 50 plus, last year in the D5 42 point summat.

Where to look or is this typical?

Not sure about your model but my mpg dropped from good in my S80 (03) to poorer in my S60. Apparently caused by the dpf! Progress my foot! Same engine, same driver and same journeys.

I have the 56 plate V70 2.4 D5 182bhp Geartronic and mostly driving like Morgan Freeman driving Miss Daisy about.

My driving is as follows,
120 miles covered so far on this test since reset,
using as much cruise control as possible,
mostly country A/B roads with about 5% on a dual hitting 70+,
25% urban, Thetford, Bury ST Edmunds, Watton
when in urban, switching to manual mode and hitting the highest gear asap, in auto its always 1 gear lower than it should be for eco.
mostly flatlands, with no hill gradient hitting lower than 30mpg IC
neutral selected whenever i come to a stop
I should also mention that driving like the above will delay my gearbox clunks and slips, so bonus....

The best so far is 37.4mpg and still climbing, but, if i tickle it some, that will drop and can take a good few miles to gain it back

If you have the 182bhp, then your 42mpg is good, i would suggest adopting the Miss Daisy Approach

Totally normal for a Euro IV D5.

Ita pretty much what you get from that engine.

Iv gone from a xc70 to xc70 and lost a little more mpg.

Thing is, I love the car. It's a small sacrifice. Before the xc70 I had a Passat 2ltr. I regularly got in the 50's.

I put it down to, a heavier car, auto box, bigger 5 pot engine.

Exactly the same as mine of the same age, mileage, and fastidious upkeep, MCfasty, taking into account that the trip readout flatters by exactly 8.5%.

For 46 it needed warmer weather, but not so warm as to need the aircon, which seems to have an unusually large impact, given the size of the engine.

I don't think the old fashioned gearbox helps - the difference between the autos and the manuals seems greater than in cars with more modern torque converter autos, let alone DSGs.

That and the £300 road tax are a pain. A friend has his in France, where the tax is based on the MOT emissions - it's over 12 years old and last year fell into the lowest tax band as the emissions were so low, which just goes to show what nonsense the UK system is for older cars.

Can expectations be higher for the 2012 cars/212 bhp?

Somewhat.... for a given set of driving circumstances, the twin-turbo Euro V models should return 3-5mpg more than a Euro IV. Of course, one person's regular journeys aren't the same as another's, but here's the fuel log from ours: http://www.fuelly.com/car/volvo/v70/...saachd7/228382

Over the time that we had it my commute was typically 12-13 miles each way with no motorways, but with hills (for the first 3 years had an 800ft climb from cold). Motorways typically returned mid-high 40s, with a best ever tank of 50.09.

It will NOT match a 4-cyl BMW, no matter what you do. I recently drove a VEA D4 V60, which returned a claimed 60mpg (so maybe about 55mpg) over the course of a long 300 mile day of motorway (M62/M60/M62/M6/M42/M40 to coventry. M69/M1/M62 return), and I reckon our V70 D5 (2011, later 205 + polestar) would have returned 45mpg (true tank calc) on that run driven similarly. However, the VEA was dreadfully laggy and unresponsive, so there's that.

Ultimately this is an area where BMW were at that time ahead of Volvo

One thing that does annoy me with the xc70 is the poor estimated last 10% of the tank. For example, yesterday I had 90 miles in the tank, this morning I had 70 miles (apparently) in the tank. I drove 5 miles down the road and it was on 45miles.....

I find it ok as long as the driving style does not change, a slight heavy foot and its drops like the proverbial mic
