I've just re-read the link I posted and realised that was about oil filters (doh!) so it may not be that relevant. However it suggests Mann do supply Volvo-packaged filters so perhaps they also do the fuel filter.

The Volvo OEM D5 fuel filter cartridge has exactly, and I do mean exactly, the same top connection dimensions as the MANN aftermarket cartridge fuel filter. Ok the OEM filter does have a different twisty looking surface and is £30 as opposed to £20 for the MANN. So the old filter fitted by the previous owner was another aftermarket that had a non OEM top connection design !
Looks like I messed up when fitting the new MANN filter. Must have put the filter in at an angle jamming the O ring. But can't understand why I managed to get the old filter back in so easy !! Also was told by the Volvo spares person that they recently had to replace a plastic cartridge fuel filter housing that was cracked by the owner while replacing the fuel cartridge filter ! Will be trying again with the OEM filter the weekend.

OEM filter went in ok, firm click.
On closer inspection the MANN top small O ring is slightly thicker at 2.1mm, OEM O ring is 2mm. Perhaps this small difference was a factor as the OEM filter is a tight fit ? But as Volvo are seeing cracked plastic fuel filter housings after DIY maintenance, I will always be using OEM fuel filters in future. Lesson learnt.

I've just had a similar experience with a Bosch filter element, got it in eventually but it didn't feel right. Car runs so it's probably OK.
Bonkers place to fit a fuel filter unless you've got a vehicle lift or a pit. |
