XC70 Washer bottle pump & fixings question.

Merry Christmas to you all.

So my 2015 XC70 D5 AWD has decided to throw a Xmas day hissy fit.

Front and rear washers have stopped.

Am I right in thinking that the front and rear washers work off one pump?

When I popped the wheeler arch cover down I found an upright pump which tees off and appears to be for the headlamp washer pump.

I could see the 2nd pump but could not get to it. I can hear some relays clicking when activating the stalk for front and rear washers but no water. I am guessing the pump has died as the 15a fuses (No 9 & 10) under the glove box are good. Have I missed any other fuses?

I have had some false washer fluid level messages, i.e. It has flagged up a dashboard message for empty washer reservoir when It was actually 3/4 full.
Can the level sensor float cut off power to the pumps?

Also please can anyone advise me what other fixings other than the two under the wheel arch hold the bottle in?. There were two screws and a push in peg from the wheel arch side but the bottle is clearly attached elsewhere.

Do I need to pop the bumper out to get access to drop the bottle down.

Any tips appreciated.

Yes you need to pull back the bumper cover on that side to replace the Ford wash pump , Most of volvos problems in that era have FoMoCo on them .. You do not need to remove the bottle . Maybe fit a new float switch too whilst you have it exposed ..

I've actually found that if you have slim fingers and your deft with snipe nosed pliers ou can prise out the auxiliary / day running light cover and remove said FoMoCo part without taking the bumper cover off.

As is typical of a FoMoCo part it was poorly designed and was full off water and silt in the motor...so despite it being Boxing Day and as I have a lengthy journey this afternoon and will need the screen washers, I stripped it down, washed it out with maths and compressed air, dried it with heat and It now works again.

I've added a picture of the seperate components which all just pull apart by hand.
The rubber grommet was not a tight fit so I wiped it with glycerine to make it swell slightly. It was this that allowed the water past.

Re the float it too was covered in silt. Bottle and float now flushed out. All working as it should.

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

I've still got a 240 wash pump on one of my cars , it has been working for the last 40 years over 300000 miles with no problem , A proper gear pump with brass wheels …
The older volvos have much more quality than newer ones , now if the latest volvos had that quality they would be over £100,000 of course ...

Your 240 was from an era of solid engineering.

We are now in the throw away era...Thinking about it I bet I'm probably part of a soon to be extinct species,
you know, people who like to repair rather than replace.
