Smile registration plate transfer questions

hi, guys. i sorned my 95 440 back in feb .to get it repaired,& bought a focus estate for work. my 440 has a private plate of which i would like to transfer on to the focus. the 440 also ran out of m.o.t 7th july. i have the application form, but it does not say if the 440 needs a current m.o.t for the transfer to go ahead, but its fine if the tax expires within 12 months. other forums are saying both cars have to be taxed/tested etc? what do you think ? thanks guys. steve w.

Pretty sure the car you're transferring from doesn't need an MOT. I'm sure my mate took a classic reg off a mini he had in his driveway and stuck it on his saab daily driver.

It used to be the case that the "donor" car needed to be MoT'd.
Not sure that's still the case and the DVLA web site is like talking to a robot.
Is it worth trying it and seeing if they approve the swop - might do if you're paying them money or alternatively, do you know a friendly MoT man?
