Default Volvo S40 Reduced Engine Performance & engine cut-off

Leaving this here for someone that might experience the same issue as I did. After a good few days of research I wasn't able to find much help online but I am hoping my experience will help some poor soul that's going through the same problem.

I am the recent owner of a Volvo S40 1.6D from 2010(10). About two weeks ago I started experiencing what's known as limp/home mode - Reduced Engine Performance came up on the display and the car wouldn't go beyond 3000rpm. Additionally, on 2 or 3 occasions the engine would simply cut off while in traffic which was quite frustrating and scary as you can imagine.

Some users here and on other forums suggested that there could be a problem with the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). I immediately bought some DPF cleaner (Wynn's are highly rated), added it to the full tank and took it to the motorway.
That didn't help as the error message kept coming up.

I then called an authorised Volvo service (Koping in Dublin) who luckily were able to accommodate me on short notice, ran diagnostics and were able to trace the problem to the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and Fuel Filter. Service bill: €465 out of which €190 was the labour. Car's running fine so far.

Again, I am only leaving this here because after my online research I became frustrated with the lack of information I could find about this problem.

If you arrived on this thread as a result of searching for "reduced engine performance", I am hoping this will help. I also strongly encourage you to book your car into your closest authorised service as soon as possible.

Thank you for your post, 2 years later after your post, this helped me identify the problem with my car.
