v70 awd p1 - Propshaft Bearing
Hi All,
Looking for some advice, my v70 has failed its MOT on "Centre propshaft bearing excessively worn" Can the bearing be replaced itself and how difficult is that or am I looking at a whole new propshaft? I've not even looked at the cost of that by I imagine it will be big money. Any links to suppliers would be great. (Car is a '98) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, C |

The bearing is integral to the shaft, so needs to go to a specialist to be cut off. A new bearing fitted and then the prop welded back up and ballenced. Might be worth finding a second hand complete shaft from a scrap car. But a lot have already been removed.

Hi 740T
I am in a similar boat, so hope we can find a solution. I hope that it is possible to dismantle the centre joint, but havent tried it yet. Photos attached. Steve

Looking more closely at the centre area, it looks like things could come part by undoing some circlips and what looks like a central retaining bolt.

Various types out there so be careful to get the right one (shaft or just the bearing).
I don't know if the propeller shaft is different between manual and auto trans . Of these 3 links, the last one looks promising for a 1998. http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...clamp/1041454/ https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293155641781 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-V70...sAAOSwT6pVxMxl Steve

The universal joint is 'bog standard' and comes apart quite easily. Remove the circlips and put one part of the prop shaft in a vice to hold it steady, then using a drift on the X tap it downwards to push the bearing cup out of it's seat. Then turn over and do the same to remove the opposite cup. Once both cups are removed, turn the shaft around and do the same with the remaining two cups. Once all four cups are out the X will just fall out. Once the universal joint is dismantled, it should be possible to undo the retaining bolt and the joint jaws should slide off the end of the shaft. It will most likely be splined and will need a puller to remove. Likewise, with the centre bearing, that should pull off - or be cut off the shaft and a new bearing pressed on. I suspect the new bearing may need a substantial press to fit and it may be a case of combined DIY and some specialist involvement with a machine shop with a press. The universal joint is re-assembled in reverse to dismantling.

Hi All,
Thanks for the responses. I spoke to Volvo and they used to only sell the complete shaft, that part is no longer available and even if it was it was £800. The shaft is being taken off today and going to a driveshaft specialist. I'l keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks, C |

Hi All,
I went ahead and had the propshaft removed and taken to a specialist to be totally rebuilt total cost for the rebuild was £299 exc vat. I didn't think that was too bad. Few other bits and bob done and thats the car with a ticket for another year. |
