Anti skid service required - fixed

If anybody is interested I have just fixed the anti skid service required issue on my 2006 C70.

Volvo dealership quoted me £900 and my local independent Volvo specialist quoted me £600. I fixed it myself for £37 plus £50 for a Vida clone.

I used Vida to identify the problem (bcm-0134 brake pressure sensor). On these units the brake pressure sensor is located within the hydraulic control unit. So I just ordered a second hand one from eBay, dismantled my ABS unit and replaced the HCU. Keeping my previous module and pump.

The ABS unit is located behind the battery on the C70 II, so you have to take out the cross bar and the battery/housing to get to it. It's fairly easy to do, just the location makes it tricky to loosen and tighten everything back down. After the HCU is swapped over replace everything and bleed the brakes. Use Vida again to clear the codes and that's it. Done!

Saved myself £863 from Volvo or £563 from the indie.

Got to wonder why Volvo don't do the same. I guess they'd only have to charge the customer £150 odd rather than £900+VAT.

Now that's the sort of fix I like to hear of, I'm guessing you disconnect all the brake unions that come together at this unit?

When I spoke to Volvo, I gave them the code I was getting and they wanted to replace the whole ABS unit and that would mean it would have to be reprogrammed to my car. The independent wanted to take my old unit out, send it to be refurbished somewhere then put it back. The independent actually told me there was no cheap option for this problem and he had 3 cars he was going to scrap because they had the same issue. Crazy!

Yeah you have to disconnect all the brake lines from the HCU. There are 6 in total. Take a picture before you do this so you can be sure they are going back in the right place. The lines do tend to stay where they are when you take the unit out so you can't really mess it up.

None up to now.

There are two lines which come out the top of the unit and run along the firewall. I left the top one open at the join on the line and had the brake pumped till fluid came out, closed it up and then bled at each wheel starting with the front right. So guessing I must have pushed all the air out.

This was a problem on many makes of car about 10 years ago , volvo were doing a free fix on them ,,, who knows it might be still open ...... the main hydraulic unit was £450 from Volvo .. Or there are many repairers sorting this as so many makes were suffering the problem , they put a new pressure sensor in .
