do not get too excited. the xc90 standard tyres are s... on the snow. Shocking how bad the car is compare to our freelander with Wrangler tyres. Almost had a crash on Monday... the car would not stop... parked it afterwards and have mainly used the freelander thsi week.

Still a big heavy lump of metal at the end of the day, can't defy gravity no matter what you do! Even with all the toys on the Disco I slid down a steep hill yesterday for a few yards as just no grip what so ever.
I'll be putting Grabbers or Wintracs on the XC when it arrives as tyres can make a huge difference and we are getting to the point in the UK where swapping tyres for winter makes sense, interestingly I thought to myself I'll get the tyres shipped to the supplying Volvo dealer and they'd just do me the favour of sticking them on seeing as I'm spending £34k on a car from them, to my delight they said they would........for £75 + VAT!! You can imagine my potty mouthed response, even Black Circles only want £14 a wheel for fitting, looks like I'll stick with the local guy I use, £20 cash to swap all 4! James. |

Guarantee its the tyres. Even my front wheel drive V70 was better than Freelanders in the snow in Aberdeen last year. The V70 did have a set of Vredestein winters on it. It was fun driving past stuck 4wd's in our 2wd. Winters will also really help with stopping in all conditions below 7 deg.

Thanks for the feedback. It would actually be illegal in the Czech Republic to drive the XC90 without winter tires. I have a full set of the Vredstein Wintrac Extremes in the garage - which I need to schlep over to the dealer, so they can fit them (I was under the impression they'd do it for free, but seeing drpepper's post, I guess I'll have to check ;-). Our current v40 has been doing OK in ~14 snow here, but will not compare to the XC90... |
