do not get too excited. the xc90 standard tyres are s... on the snow. Shocking how bad the car is compare to our freelander with Wrangler tyres. Almost had a crash on Monday... the car would not stop... parked it afterwards and have mainly used the freelander thsi week.

Not sure whats wrong with your XC90 then, because our's was excellent even before we fitted winter tyres. I assume you realise 4wd doesn't mean you can stop any better than a normal car?

Still a big heavy lump of metal at the end of the day, can't defy gravity no matter what you do! Even with all the toys on the Disco I slid down a steep hill yesterday for a few yards as just no grip what so ever.

I'll be putting Grabbers or Wintracs on the XC when it arrives as tyres can make a huge difference and we are getting to the point in the UK where swapping tyres for winter makes sense, interestingly I thought to myself I'll get the tyres shipped to the supplying Volvo dealer and they'd just do me the favour of sticking them on seeing as I'm spending £34k on a car from them, to my delight they said they would........for £75 + VAT!! You can imagine my potty mouthed response, even Black Circles only want £14 a wheel for fitting, looks like I'll stick with the local guy I use, £20 cash to swap all 4!

James.

nothing wrong with my xc. it is miles better than the audi front wheel drive on tjhe snow but much worse compare to the freelander with wrangler all weather tyres.

I suspect the difference is mainly due to those conti tyres... i will change those and update you.

Guarantee its the tyres. Even my front wheel drive V70 was better than Freelanders in the snow in Aberdeen last year. The V70 did have a set of Vredestein winters on it. It was fun driving past stuck 4wd's in our 2wd. Winters will also really help with stopping in all conditions below 7 deg.

Hi reggie59,

Thanks for the feedback. It would actually be illegal in the Czech Republic to drive the XC90 without winter tires. I have a full set of the Vredstein Wintrac Extremes in the garage - which I need to schlep over to the dealer, so they can fit them (I was under the impression they'd do it for free, but seeing drpepper's post, I guess I'll have to check ;-). Our current v40 has been doing OK in ~14 snow here, but will not compare to the XC90...

You may find that as it's law to change them the dealers have to oblige, or just that your dealers are a little more customer focussed than our, frankly it's a **** poor do for my first direct customer contact with them since the car was ordered (car ordered by 3rd party), however I did deal with them when looking to order directly rather than via 3rd party and they were useless then too! Hasn't filled me with desire to use them in future!
