Skip straight to the bottom for links to software downloads

Then go about halfway back up for software install instructions

1st half is all about the hardware tool you can come back to that if you get one. I used those links and instructions and they worked for me on windows 10

Just as a hint.
If you're thinking about buying a unit from Cheshired5, don't get VIDA anywhere. Cheshired5 has "his" version where installation support is available.

I'm a programmer myself, I can install VIDA on my own, but depending on your own skills, it might be better (if you buy a device) to use the version from the seller despite another (maybe different) version from the net.

But to be honest with you, if you have two Volvos, it's a no brainer - send Simon a PM and get a VCXNano and the VIDA version from him.

I have two installs; one on the laptop which I did and then borrowed a vcx which worked, and one on one of my desktop PCs which will never be connected to the car but works well as a reference tool on a much larger screen for convenience..

Both were installed from the link I supplied, I can't see that a different download link will be a problem

Besides which the credits at the bottom actually reference cheshired5 so I figured if I stuck with that one and just got one of his vcx's later it would be fine.

Also fluent with computers myself though, so it's easy enough to remove and replace with a different version

@stuart bowes
That wasn't aimed in your direction.

I didn't check the link you provided, but there are numerous versions out there, I for one have three different. That's why I said, it would be a good idea to think about it first before "blindly" downloading from a not known source. If, and that's only if, he buys a unit from Simon why not just take the known working version that comes with a support package?

If I read of all the problems people have with installing VIDA, it is my advice to stay with known sources. If people are knowledgable enough (you, me), they will find their way around the usual install problems, but then they will likely not need installation support.

I configure my VCX tools diffently from stock so whilst they're plug and play with the free software I supply, they'd probably need a simple 5 minute tweak on another system.

Even if you're proficient with computers, I'd recommend buying from a seller who has a solution for all the little things that can crop up.
One look at the Amazon reviews show that VCX tools work very well once they're working but they don't install and run like regular computer peripherals and I've never come across anyone who could install and run Vida reliably with zero instructions and prior knowledge.

To some that's a nice little challenge to work out over a few hours but most just want to read their car asap.

apologies, perhaps that did come across a little over-defensive lol

I just meant to point out that you can use it as a reference tool on PC's that don't need to connect, the version is irrelevant in that case

you're right about the install you plan to use with the dice or vcx though I will concede that makes sense

aint that the truth, I did try a number of different things and I got nowhere until i came across that guide, with the torrent version and detailed how-to

before that I was trying a different version with windows 7 on VMware and that was a whole other bag of issues lol on the best of about 5 attempts I got the software working, and it was seeing the USB tool, but just wouldn't connect to the car

yeah it was ball-ache

I agree to a point but you never know when you might want to up the ante and get a tool only to find out the software isn't plug and play and the (not very entertaining) game starts all over again.

A not 100% Vida installation for reference use only is definitely better than nothing, granted but for less effort with the right files and instructions, a long term, guaranteed working Vida installation is preferable.

But I would say that wouldn't I?

Well it doesn’t the rain but pours! Not only do I have a problem with the anti skid on my 2005 XC70, but my wife’s 2010 C30 has just cut out with a reduced power message. Restarted after a few minutes but I think some form of reader is now essential. Will contact cheshired5.

.........having just composed a pm to cheshired5 it then tells me I can’t because I’ve not posted enough🤨. So can I ask cheshired5 to contact me at his earliest convenience please to discuss purchasing a “reading to go” package with “Vida”.

Dave

Just drop a note in the selling thread for Cheshired5, here: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=253191

But I'm sure Simon will look in here as well.

EDIT: Or you post in this thread to get over the treshold: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=99800
