Default Engine ventilation cover

There is a plastic cover under the grill on the front, in the manual it says you should remove it during the summer to let the engine get some fresh air to keep it cold. And during the winter keep it on so the engine doesn't freeze.

Is this something you guys are aware of? Also what's the specific name for that part?

Funny, I was just trying to get that out at the weekend to see the bottom of the condenser! I never knew that it was meant to come in and out with the seasons!

Your lucky to have one, my GDi has not got one.
All you need to do is pop it out for BOTH days of summer

Sorry, talking crap again! Looked up the manual and found that the bit I have is not the one you guys are talking about, but looks a useful bit of kit.

I think that it's probably only used in colder climates, to prevent overcooling ?

When i had my GDI about 5 yrs ago it was the `98 model and only having a lady owner previous it was complete with this extra front cover in a nice long plastic bag.

They are quite rare but then they could be bought from the Volvo Dealer.

The GDI probably because of it`s direct injection system and a comp. ratio of 12 to 1 it did tend to want to run hotter for emissions. Also the tendency was there for it to overheat hence the 87 degree thermostat instead of the 1.8 Volvo engined 91 degrees thermostat.

In winter conditions to help the engine run at it`s proper temp.because of a lower opening thermostat the extra front cover was a must for economy to be kept.

That's interesting. I've always wondered why my GDI runs about 4mpg lower in winter than in summer.
