£450 and still no fix! Anyone with engine mount experience?
Hi folks, Im getting VERY frustrated with my V70 TDI 1999 Classsic. It suffers an intrusive knocking rattle from in front of the bulk head centre area.
My local garage was confident the CAT had broken down and was rattling (it also smelt). However replaced yesterday and has made no improvement at all. I'm now trying to track the noise down before a spend any more money! Clues are: Happens when engine moves through lower rev range. Will happen occasionally when reving stationary (hence not suspension). Have removed lots of dash to hear better - definitly seems to be outside in engine bay. Managed to get it to do it a little on drive stationary this morning - occures as engine passes a through a rougher running band between 1.5K and 2K revs. Its not really evident in engine bay, but clearly resonated through cabin. Any advice where should I look next, top engine mount has been replaced lower rear mount looks to be in the right sort of area - could this be transfering the resonance? This looks like about a £100 gamble should I go ahead? Help very much appreciated. Ian |

On my T5 there is a top rubber mount on the engine and another bolted on the bulkhead with an arm between. I assume you changed the one on the engine as that usually fails. Is the one on the bulkhead OK and securely bolted.
Before buying the lower mount can you raise the car on axle stands and examine it? While you are under the car you could check if anything is touching the bulkhead. I dont believe a cat is required on a diesel car to pass an MOT so a section of pipe could have been welded in place of it. Simon |

Appologies if the forum moderators think this is a commercial advert, but i am here to help others.
I have had this problem or at least one similar a few months ago. the rattle turned out to be a broken spring in the cluch plate. If your car is auto then disregard this pathetic statement. lol if auto then maybe a lok at the drive plate as the older 700 and 900s were prone to cracking and making a noise at low revs. Hope this helps. regards. Not sure how the classic engine is laid out, but have you checked the turbo heat sheilds ?

RE: £450 and still no fix! Anyone with engine mount experience?
Thanks for the suggestions, in response:
Simon - the top mount is fairly new and is secure. It would appear to be a shame I went and replaced the CAT! I have got beneath the car a couple of times to look and really nothing jumps out as a cause. Keith - clutch plate spring broken - interesting suggestion, if I'm honest it did seem to originate/get significantly worse after an enthusiastic right turn out of a T junction. The big question - is there anyway to prove this without huge cost? I wouldent want to go down the road of getting the clutch out to find this isnt the problem. Chris - turbo heat shields all firmly intact. Three options now - Subframe bushes rear or engine mount, opinions which goes first very welcome; and clutch plate spring broken, how can this be confirmed? Thanks for your efforts everyone. Hi, if this enthusiastic right turn from a t junction was actually screw the car away and spin to show off to the ladies at the bus stop, lol, then it is likely the spring has gone. It may be that you would leave the spring until the clutch needs to be replaced, but, i would suggest that the spring could break and lose a piece into the system which could cause untold damage.
My advice is think about the miles and if the vclutch could be worn and close to nbeeding a change. if so then i would get it done before it costs you a fortune for a gearbox with a hole and a leak. If i can be of help please mail me. regards. Keith |

RE: £450 and still no fix! Anyone with engine mount experience?
Hi Keith,
Thanks for your help. Do the following symptoms reflect the clutch spring: - Out of gear can be heard in car when throttle blipped and stationary, however very little evident when head under bonnet. - Will occur briefly when moving off and coasting at walking pace down gentle gradient, again out of gear. - Can be evident under power at any speed. Do you know of any way do increase confidence in this being the cause before I shell out a lot more money? Thanks again Ian Ian Curnow ---------------------------- V70 99 TDI |

My 340,000 mile and climbing 850 tdi auto had a lower drivers side engine mounting go(the one by the aux belt/cam belt. I was convinced the auto box was gone. The symptom was a loud knock on idle and rev, wheel bearing type noise ONLY on left hand bends.

RE: £450 and still no fix! Anyone with engine mount experience?
Thanks DDN,
I'm getting increasingly convinced that I need to spend some proper time looking at the engine mounts. Do you know if its a big job to replace the mount you mention. I think that one is the nmost likely as I beleive the rear one is liquid filled and either works or fails very clearly. Ian Ian Curnow ---------------------------- V70 99 TDI |

Progress, got wheel off to inspect mount by lowever pulley. Very soft, so will replace - hopefuly it will fix the noise. After replacing wheel I kicked it - as you do. And loud and clear my problem noise, bang bang bang bang bang, the main struct spring is resonating, I am incluned to think the worn mount is creating the resonance. Front suspension refurbished last year so dont thinkl its actually a problem with the suspension components.
Has anyone else ever suffered similar? Ian Curnow ---------------------------- V70 99 TDI |
