Carpet cleaning

If anyone out there is thinking of cleaning their car carpets, then I can perhaps offer this piece of advice:
Use a Jet Washer on them!

I had the misfortune to spill a full 5lt tub of odourless, waterbased Fence Preservative in the rear passenger footwell of my V70 last week (went round an island a bit too quickly, forgot the tub was there, and I assumed the lid wouldn’t come off anyway...…). Once the expletives had been exhausted, I squeezed out all I could from the footwell mat and scooped up most of the goo with a dustpan and brush, then had to remove the rear section of carpet from the car. Fortunately the seats came out quite quickly and without too much trouble, as these have to be removed before the fitted carpet can be extracted.
As this particular product is water-based, I thought I’d try hosing the carpets down - as I had nothing to lose in trying to clean them, as I was pretty sure they were beyond salvage anyway. This process seemed to work, but was taking an eternity to show any real results, so I thought I’d go for broke and turn the Jet Washer on them. Within minutes the carpets were showing signs of their original colour, and were staying intact!
After 10 minutes or so, no more preservative was coming out of the carpets, so I left them to dry draped over a patio chair in the greenhouse. The carpets are now as good – and clean – as new, and they don’t smell!
So if anyone is trying to clean up their carpets, I can recommend this process. ( But don’t feel you have to spill the Cuprinol beforehand!)
