Default 2nd Opinion on Catalytic Converter, Please?

2008 XC90 V8

My mechanic failed my state inspection today on an exhaust leak from one of the braided flex pipes coming off the catalytic converter and says I need to replace the entire cat (which comes with the flex pipes). No engine codes are present. Does this sound like the right diagnosis? Or is there a way to repair without replacing the cat? If the cat does need replacing, what brand is recommended? Thanks!

You can get these flexible pipes from motorsport companies , you have to get it welded in after cutting the old one off .

Another related question, I decided to buy the part online and save $300 over the shop price. I chose Bosal 099-1996 after reading up on Bosal, Magnaflow and other aftermarket.

Question: Will the gaskets in the Bosal kit be decent or should I spend the money on Volvo branded gaskets the set would be about $50. Thanks!
