Question '00 S40 1.8 Odd Rattle

My googlings have turned up nothing useful, and a full inspection showed no issues, so I thought I'd turn to the experts.

My '00 S40 1.8 is making an odd rattling noise on acceleration when cold. I should probably say "on torque", as it seems more related to that. Basically on initial acceleration, on declutching etc. I would describe the rattle as "hollow".

More concerningly there is sometime a corresponding dip in the power output of the engine, recently enough to feel a stutter in the car's acceleration. Once the car is warm it goes away.

I'd be very grateful for any insight. I'm a robotics engineer, so generally mechanically versed, but not deeply when it comes to car specifics.

When my Dual Mass Flywheel finally gave up, that frequently made some rather disturbing rattles when pressing the clutch like you mention - and although it was pretty random, it did seem to be when cold more often. Probably barking up the wrong tree though.

Hmm, really hoping it isn't that, given the apparent cost. I can make the rattle happen without changing gear, just by accelerating relatively hard without touching the clutch.
