Default 460 GLEi Automatic not running over 3000rpm

Can anyone help in curing a slight problem we have with our 460.A few months ago whilst driving we went for kick-down to go up a hill. The box dropped down a gear but wouldnt go past 3000rpm??? You can apply full throttle and she makes a really restrained sound as if she's got a "rev limiter" fitted. We've been told its many things from air leaks into the manifold to not enough fluid in the gear box. We had recently (two days before) serviced the car at home before this started. If anyone has any suggestions on whats wrong and if possible how to rectify then we would be most grateful, the poor girl doesn't drive too well at the moment. Its a 1990 H reg 1700 with 98500 on the clock for info
Thanks in advance

Joe and Andrew

not too sure about auto boxes, does it rev OK when not in gear? when did you last check/change the fluid? does it smell burnt? if so would be worth flushing out.

Put your query in the new forum below so that more people will reply to it, we're not supposed to put new postings in this forum anymore.
...oops you already have !! LOL teaches me to open my big mouth

Try the idle speed potentiometer, I had a problem with my Auto S90 in that it would not ‘kick down’ every time, I thought it was just a characteristic until I was told it was the potentiometer that was causing the problem. Now it kicks down every time and the car is now very responsive.

Hi Andy,
She wont rev past the 3K mark when in neutral or park or any other gear.
I have been checking the fluid in the box and the level seems fine. I was advised that to get a true reading you would have to dip the stick a couple of times because otherwise it would be a false reading. I have topped her up though on the odd occasion.
The fluid doesnt smell burnt but it is brown not red. She's booked in to an auto gearbox specialist soon to have a flush and filters changed but they reckon that by the sounds of it it has nothing to do with the gearbox as it changes gear ok unless you want more rev! however they did mention that the fluid being brown isn't doing it any favours!!
Thanks for the advise though

;)
