Take it round a tight corner and boot it - you'll soon feel the difference!

Looking back at some of my old photo's of when I've had the inspection cover off before, I'm pretty sure that's how it comes from the factory.

Looks like standard "red lead" to me, possibly they used a higher spec than we would buy in the shops but very similar.

I was referring to the outside black. Looks like you have rubbed down and painted in the other pictures

Cheers Mark

Oh..... that paint... The axle was cleaned up with a wire brush and one of those resin abrasive wheels which are used to remove paint, then given a generous helping of phosphoric acid and another go with a wire brush to remove as much rust as possible before I went over it with stone chip paint then some smooth Hammerite.

Found the sticker on my Diff. It's 1031 as suggested

IMG_3269.JPG

I'm assuming it's pretty standard

It's a 3.54:1 so no, not many had them as far as i'm aware. I think the majority were 3.73:1 - i could be wrong though and look like a wally at the moment for saying that!

Forgot to add my two penn'orth to this thread! First, fill and drain plugs removed :

Scary looking swarf on the drain plug :

Cleaned up nicely though and was obviously not as bad as at first glance :

How i refilled it after :

Funnel in the fuel pump/sender access hatch with a bit of hose on into the diff. Much easier than trying to squirt it in from underneath!

That's a steel inspection cover so that would suggest it has the 12 tooth tone ring, but it looks like a 1031 axle....

Never thought about topping the oil up like that!
