Default long brake travel after caliper change

V70 2.4t 2001 139K

Having just had calipers & pads etc. changed because of brake binding, the pedal travel seems longer. My mechanic as bled them several times today and says there is no change.

Does anyone know if this is an issue or will it just take time to bed in?

Is there a quirk to bleeding V70 brakes

Cheers

Ben

I wonder? Read this particularly in view of new calipers.

Check the calipers and make sure that the bleed nipples are at the top.

Is it a manual or an auto?

Ben
it would seem longer as previously one caliper only had to move (cos the other one was stuck) now two are moving so needs more travel?

Makes no difference, I use dot 4 in the xc70 and the landrover every time I change fluid or bleed the system, no long peddle on either car.

Its the new pads bedding in and better return of caliper combined with no brake-pump from the heat expansion.
Itll bed in after a few hundred miles.
I have just done the same, and have the same problem, but I know its normal.
Did rear calipers and pads on wifes car a couple of months back, she complained of same, back to normal now.

Having sent this forum link to my mechanic he looked again this morning and the springs on N/S caliper had been assembled as below far rhs image.

Now it has been corrected the brakes are back to normal

Thanks to everyone for helping me to sort it.

Been there, done that.. No t-shirt, though..

I was thinking about it the minute I've seen your first post, but I didn't expect anyone else to do such an idiotic mistake, especially a mechanic!

And that's why I kept quiet.

Apologies.

Btw:

Week ago I was replacing my top strut mounts. One of things I had to disassemble to get there were brakes. On assembly, I almost made same mistake again, exactly the way your mechanic did. The force required to put this spring it this very position is huge! (And that's what stopped me and made me rethink my approach). How strong hands dies your mechanic have? Suggestion of taking up arm wrestling?

Ha, once again, the old "it's bedding in" thing again.

No. It isn't.

I'm glad the problem was solved. Bedding in does not cause long brake travel, never did, and it's impossible. The difference between a new disc and one bedded in negligable to the level of absurdity. Even if it was a millimeter, which wayyyyyy less than in reality, then you'd have a millimeter of pedal travel. To suggest an extra coupole of inches or so of pedal travel is due to the tiniest of disc imperfection is absolutely ludicrous.

It can never manifest as pedal travel. There is always a fault which needs fixing. Bedding in is an excuse. You cannot tell me that new cars leaving the factory are unsafe for their first 100 miles. Absolute codswallop.

I hear this so often.
