Default Parking sensors.

Hi. I am new and the owner of a 2006 XC70 D5, so hello everyone. I am looking for advice re rear parking sensors. To start with a bit of background to my problem I have fitted a Grom Bluetooth device to the car. In the main this works fine with the HU850 stereo thinking the Grom is a 10 cd external cd changer. I can now play music from my phone plus answer calls totally hands free. The one problem is that when the parking sensors are activated the music will advance one track or the telephone call will be ended depending on which function is in use. A couple of days ago the wife and I headed into town to do a bit of early Christmas shopping, I know, it's only October, and we were listening to music through the Bluetooth, JJ Cale as it happens, good music. Now, sometimes, in heavy traffic, the parking sensors are briefly activated, the car has front as well as rear sensors, so I had turned them off. When we arrived at our destination I reversed into a parking space, forgetting the sensors were turned off, and managed to make contact with a cunningly hidden post. I well remember the days before parking sensors and so I guess there is a lesson to be learned here. The contact with the post was very light but was, unfortunately directly on to the nearside sensor. I now have a message telling me 'parking system service required' and non of the sensors work. Now, to my non car designing mind, I would have thought these sensors would be accessable from the outside. How foolish of me to think car designers would make things so simple. I now understand the whole rear bumper needs to be removed. I have ordered a replacement sensor, plus spare, at very reasonable cost through Amazon but I am looking for advice as to how to remove the rear number. The car is fitted with a tow hitch and mudflaps and I am not sure if this will complicate matters. Any advice, including detailed instructions, would be most gratefully received. Sorry about the long post. I will await helpfull advice with bated breath.
PS
It is a lovely car.

Hi & welcome .

If you've got the factory fitted system, you'll need the correct sensors rather than a generic one that's widely available. I believe there is a Jaguar / Land Rover part which is cheaper than buying the same thing from Volvo. Anything else just won't work.

As to the original problem of the Grom unit doing weird things when the sensors are activated, it sounds like a firmware issue with the unit which is mis-interpreting the CAN BUS data. I had an IMIV unit to connect an iPod & that also seemed to do weird things when using unrelated controls on the car. Sold the car before I got to the bottom of it.

Have a look at the Parking Assistance retrofit instructions which show how to fit the parking sensors

Here are the instructions for the V70, 2006 model
XC70 will be very similar to the V70

Very useful, thanks for that. I hope the replacement sensors work, they arrive tomorrow but are not genuine Volvo parts. We will see.

Thumbs up Success!!!!!

Well, the replacement sensor, plus spare, just to be on the safe side, arrived promptly today. Thanks Amazon. Getting the bumper off was the, relatively, easy part. Separating the outer bumper skin from the inside bit was the difficult bit. There is no access to the parking sensors without separating the two parts. Once apart replacement of the actual sensor was simple. I now have working sensors front and back. These are after market parts costing £8.88 each with free post and packaging through Amazon. Why Volvo have made it such a pain to replace these bits I will never know. I dread to think what a main dealer would have charged for the job. The moral to this saga is, make sure your parking sensors are turned on when parking! To those who offered advice, thank you very much.

Have you got a link for the sensors pls? Up to now, all the cheapie ones people have bought have failed to work so it would be useful to know of a source that do.

Default Parking sensors.

Not too sure how to post a link but they were bought through Amazon and supplied by GELUOXI COLLECTION and were £8.88 each. My Volvo specialist, John at Volcare, has cleared the 'broken no.1 parking sensor' message and now all is well. Hope that helps.

I have a 2006 XC70 D5 with factory fitted rear parking sensors. A few months ago a 'Parking Assist' fault popped up and my Volvo garage diagnosed the fault as being with sensor 2. They couldn't replace it in the time that I had available, so I bought a replacement sensor (almost £80) to replace myself. Unusually, I couldn't find anywhere on-line specific instructions on making the replacement apart from Dave2909's postings which made clear the need to remove the bumper, for which plenty of instruction was available. So, I set to to do the job and removed the bumper. After much head scratching and attempting to separate the different sections that make up the bumper assembly, it became obvious that the inner plastic casing, in which the sensors are mounted, and its 'solid foam' filling were fused to the outer skin of the bumper. So, it was not possible (without breaking clips and the adhesive bond between plastics and foam) to get access to the sensors to replace sensor 2. After 4 hours of 'experimentation' I decided to replace the bumper and live with the 'Parking Assist' error. Two questions:
1. Has anyone else had this same problem? (I'm amazed that Volvo have assembled the bumper in such a way to make sensor replacement impossible without breaking mechanical clips and bonds.)
2. Does anyone want a replacement Volvo parking sensor (which cost me £80); Part No. 30765108? As it's no good to me, first comer can have it for the cost of postage.
