Default Intermittent ns front wheel issue

Hi, wondering if anyone can help:

2001 V70 2.4t 138000

Issue has arisen only on motorway journeys and once on each journey (2.5hr each) Only lasts around 10 mins.

starts with a low hum developing into rumble from the wheel (n/s front) and I can feel a juddering through the ride and steering wheel.

Each time I have stopped, and the alloy is too hot to touch but all other wheels are fine.

It seems to be fine once I've stopped, by the time I get home the wheel has cooled to the same temp as the rest of them.

I have had the wheel off and brake pads and discs seem ok, there is no perceptible play or wobble in the axle to indicate bearing.

I have been advised, but would like to see what people here say

Cheers

Sounds like a brake binding, maybe only very slightly hence the 2.5 Hrs till it arises, then the stopping either frees it up or it cools down enough.

A bearing I'd expect to be a constant hum, something stuck between the disk & backplate would give a squeal.

Is that brake disc hot as well as the wheel? I’ve had a brake binding before and the disc was very hot compared to the other side. If it’s just the wheel that’s hot maybe wheel bearing but I’m no mechanic. When my bearing went it sounded awful with a constant rumble and the issue could be confirmed by wobbling the wheel

Thankyou for your fast replies

Am I correct in thinking that brake binding is an issue with the caliper sticking?

Is the solution to clean/replace the caliper?

I didn't feel the brake, just the wheel.

Thumbs down Had the same!

That’s exactly the symptoms exhibited by my 97 S90 before the nsf calliper seized up completely. A reconditioned calliper will sort it. If you’re lucky the discs and pads will be ok.

The other possibility is a collapsing flexible brake hose to that wheel. This can apparently cause the brakes to bind.

Not a big job, nor terribly expensive. But don’t ignore it for too long because if it seizes up altogether it’ll leave you stranded - probably somewhere cold, dark and wet!

a hot brake disk takes on an orange colour , compare it to the rest . the only way to fix it permanently is to fit a new caliper .

Just to close this for anyone with similar symptoms:

I have had the front callipers replaced and the pads were well down on one side. so fairly sure the issue was binding, will see how it goes.

Cheers for your help everyone
