Default Damn Satnav !!

Went from one end of Devon to the other today, to visit friends. Bloody sat nav took us off the A road, through some of the widest Devon wing mirror clacking roads and eventually dumped us in a farm yard with no road, just 4 inches of slurry across the ground. I have never used such a useless device. It increased our travel time by 45 mins and a few miles too. Getting totally miffed with this now. May just use the screen in the dash to suction my Tom Tom onto and be done with it. Pathetic junk.
Is it just me?

The roads we were on, were probably built by the romans. We did confuse it in a new housing estate when popping to Tescos. For a 3 yr old car, it should recognise whats where. I am getting the update disc, but didn't have time before the holiday. It did divert us into Bristol to avoid the M5 and then in the middle of Bristol, we did a lap of terraced houses, to come out in exactly the same point as we drove passed half a mile earlier !!

Ha!
I once had my satnav want me to turn into a field. Not a road turning for miles either side....but it really wanted me to head up a field!
They clearly have their moments, eh.....

I'm *hoping* the Volvo one in my XC will be good....but I am ready to keep my aging yet reliable (& up to date with mapping) Navigon....

Good luck with that Mike. It must be better, it cant be worse. My Tom Tom, just works. Updated about 2 years ago and finds my friends house ( well did last year) without any keruffles. Map is going to be the method of choice now.............Just cant trust it at all.

Slight correction - the SatNav didn't take you down narrow roads, the driver did

Perhaps you have the device set to provide the shortest route? Fastest route will generally keep you on major toads and avoid country lanes.

My iGo nav directed me to a no through road in Belgium last year, which was sort of fair enough as there was a way through to where I wanted to be but it was only a metre wide and I was towing the caravan. But the locals were fascinated by the remote control motor mover used to rotate the caravan and gained a round of applause!!

The satnav in mine is currently up-to-date (although the free update period has now expired). It mostly works very well. I find that if I distrust a particular turning, or I don't want to go that way, I just go the way I want and the satnav will compute a new route. And the satnav voice doesn't get annoyed if you refuse to go the way it says (a definite advantage over a passenger/navigator).

It is probably a good idea to consider carefully what options you have set (fastest route/ shortest journey etc).

Maybe that's the case. Cant see how to change it. I have no idea with the poxy thing. Even cant find how to put a postcode back in it, so punching in the address instead. Almost need to be a genius in computing to use it. I am learning not to be dependant on a very expensive extra. New car buyers, just buy a portable satnav dont spec it. My boss's mini, was easy. My boss's Beemer before that, easy.........Tom Tom, fool proof.......... Volvo ? woohahahahahaha

My back up assistant , is unable to read maps , as gets queasy, left her glasses in the house, has no idea where we are. My son is 11 and I am starting to train him up, as the wife is just falling apart.
