1969 164 2.9 engine
Please excuse my ignorance but can someone confirm if this engine has a timing belt or chain?

Confirm Clan is correct: all earlier genuine (ie not of Daf origin) engines had two gears, whether it be the PV range, the Amazon range, 140s, 164s and P1800s. They went to belts with the first 240s.
If needing to rebuild an engine of this range I'm not sure if they are all of the same diameter and number of teeth - they MAY be interchangeable but check up first. P |

Steel gears
HI All
If you fit the steel ones you have to slightly widen oil port in the timing case cover this will help with the noise unless you get an engine with steel and take out this oil pipe as well I was told this by a Volvo engineer when I first did it. Malcolm |

With steel gears you have to change both wheels, big on the cam and small on the crank. Meshing angles different on the fibre large/steel small gear.
