One thought , there are TWO recirculation flaps , an upper and a lower , if the upper one has stuck shut that would account for lack of airflow . If you take the glove box unit out it leaves room to the left between heater and side of the car to put a mirror and watch the mechanism move the two flaps as you press the recirculation button on and off ., you may spot something broken ....

Air Conditioning Problem - Lack of Airflow
Well I think I have discovered why the airflow and temperature is down in my S80. It has automatic climate control - the all singing dancing version. Last week I took it along to the local Volvo dealer because they were offering a free safety check and software update. I asked them to check for any Air Conditioning problems while they were doing it. They reported back that there was a permanent fault on the Climate Control and this indicated a problem with the Air Quality Sensor. I asked what did this mean and they said this was the device which monitored the incoming air and if, for instance, it contained a lot of polutants then it would switch the air intake to the cabin off and only allow recirculation. Apparently the system is permanently set to recirculate air - this seems to me to be a significantly poor decision on Volvo's part to make the system default to this mode if this sensor fails - it would be better to put up with the odd bit of pollution like everyone else does. I then asked how much this would cost to fix and was told they would not give me an estimate because it could be £2 - £300 just to diagnose the problem (they might have to take the whole dashboard out) and then there would be the cost of parts. they seemed somewhat nonchalent about all this and obviously didn't seem too interested in the business anyway.
This diagnosis seems to fit in with poor airflow, low temperatures from the system and a total lack of any demisting capability. Does anyone have any idea where the air quality sensor is located, how difficult it is to get at and what it might cost to fix, including the part?
