Default DPF in D5 - how to tell if it's in the cleaning phase?

How can you tell if the DPF filter goes through the burnin-phase?

best

I don't think there is anything that specifically tells you this (although I'm sure it is logged and can be seen through service equipment). However, twice I have stopped the car and for a couple of minutes the engines fans have been blowing on max (very loud and noticeable from the outside), I've always put this down to a DPF regeneration.

I think some time ago lexman8 put a video of this online.

Hopefully you don't. However if you stop the engine mid regeneration you will find the radiator fans blow flat out and a distinctly hot air feeling and often a smell as well.
Just drive and don't worry about it. Volvo's system should be very reliable because the DPF is attached directly to the turbo, so there is very little heat loss between the engine and filter. In some other engines, like the transverse engine versions of JLR's, the DPF is remote mounted with a long piece of pipe between it and the engine, allowing substantial cooling, which causes a lot of problems in starting the regeneration burning process.

I asked my dealer about this and they said DPF regens weren't logged which kinda surprised me.

I've only noticed one regen in 2.5 years and this was why I asked the dealer if they were logged. My Honda CR-V used to regen regularly and it was very noticeable. I wonder if using the aux fuel heater to preheat leads to fewer regens?

Nope, it wasn't me and I can't remember who it was either.

I`ve owned a VW Tiguan. Merc and now XC60 and I`ve never been aware of regen and never had an issue with DPF (I have to admit I very rarely do short trips).

You notice your mpg calculator suddenly drop while cruising on a run about 10mpg that usually lets me know the cars doing a regen
