Default Need Advice - XC60 Spare Door

Hi Guys,

Whilst my wife was driving a Bollard appeared out of nowhere. It then apparently cut open the side of the driver side passenger door. See the pictures...!

Its White - 2012 version SE LUX.

I went to a Approved (BMW and others) repair shop who quoted £6k. I told him the whole cars value is £9k.

Saw a few other people local (Live in Essex) and prices varied from £900 including doors to £1300 or so. I know i need the rear door replaced PLUS the diver, and rear re-sprayed but what kind of costs do you think i should be looking at..?

Also the biggest problem is getting a white door. Any ideas how i could source one and a few of the repair places said it all depends on if they can get a door and that is the limiting factor. They also said it'll take about 5 days, which is a bummer as wife needs the car for school runs.

Any ideas where to start to source the correct door..and any ideas what others would say the cost should be?

Thanks

Maybe a silly question, but why don't you claim on your insurance? Surely this is going to cause far less hassle and cost than trying to source a door, etc elsewhere and then having the associated costs of it all?

£6000 does sound rather excessive as you can probably have a whole car resprayed for about £3000-£4000 .....

Here you are - the whole side needs filled and painted anyway.

- Are you driving uninsured, as this is what insurance is for.....

Hi i do have insurance.

My wife has about 5 years with no claims discount protection. I have on my car about 14 years with NCD protection.

The reason for not going through insurance is because whilst the excess is £350, everyone i talk to says the premiums will go up and probably worse off in the long run. Had the car been totalled then would have had no choice but to go through insurance.

Also i will move to the appropriate YEAR, did not realise this when posting, but thats for all your help.

Thanks

usually you're allowed one or 2 claims whilst "protected no claims" before you lose the no claims discount. the premium might go up a bit, but i doubt it will go up more than a few hundred quid a year so even if you paid that for a few years, on top of the £350 excess its bound to be cheaper than paying for the repair yourself.

i had a small ding which required pushing out and small bit of paint in my old S60 which the neighbour did when reversing into my car - he wanted to go outside of insurance and for a decent bodyshop they wanted £1600. needless to say he went via insurance in the end. cannot see this being done for less than a couple of grand with damage like that, plus if its a cheap job, it'll affect resale value.

use the insurance - its what its for.

The insurance should be a fall back IMHO - but not necessarily.

What you first need is an excellent bodywork repair business.

Explain you have located a spare white door. Get a price for the repair from said repair specialist. He will want reassurance the white door is correct and will fit, otherwise, his quotation to you is somewhat screwed.

You need to know what the insurance company will definitely do to your premiums and future premiums if you were to make a claim and how it might affect your pocket.

Now work out the facts so that you can make a good decision about what exactly you need to do.

Do all of the above quickly because you might need to nail that eBay door before some else gets it.
