Default v 70 aux belt killed my engine

Hi, the auxiliary belt on my V 70 (09 plate 2.4 d) shredded on Wednesday night last week and bits of it got under the timing belt and caused it to jump some teeth, so now the cylinder head is knackered. Seems my warranty might cover it ( black-horse), but as yet 7 days later and no decision has been made. Really peed off, only had the car 5 months.

Having just changed my auxiliary belt assembly after getting a strange noise, I'm now fully aware how interwoven all these parts are.
Your car should still have years left in it at that age, so fingers crossed on your claim

Can you give more details on the car please? Age and mileage and if the Aux belt has been changed.

If memory serves, earlier models were due at 72,000 miles, then 36,000 but 54,000 miles thereafter, I think 08/09 onwards are just due every 54,000 miles.

Hoping you mange to get it sorted on warranty.

This shouldnt have happened , There was a recall , and it should have been changed on either the 36000 or 54000 mile service depending on model year , and also there is a new recall to pick up any which missed the first recall .
I guess the cars servicing has been neglected somewhere ? You need to chase it up with the seller .
Do you know which type of tensioner you have ? Does it have a big exposed coiled spring ? .

HI, the car is with heritage motors in Brierley Hill at the moment and an "engineer" is going there today from the warranty company so i should know more, and if there is a problem the Its back to black-horse in Oldbury to see what they say. To be honest it has been over a week now and i know it includes easter bank holidays but i am so peed off . I am still paying for the car and now having to pay to hire a car as well whilst this is going on, and i do not know how long this claim will go on.

Hi Clan, could you elaborate on the differences between the old and updated tensioner.

I have a 2009 V70 with no outstanding recalls, but would like to know what I am looking at.

You probably have answered this question a dozen times but I could not find anything in "search".

Thanks.

The first type from about 2007-8 had a big coiled silver coloured spring with big exposed coils about 6mm thick , this type should no longer be there as a there was recall to get rid of it , then it was incorportated in the 36000 or 54000 service , depending on model year .
so if anyone still has one get rid of it , for the later type tensioner and belt ..

The later tensioner from around 2008-9 has a fully enclosed spring so all you see is a round alloy casing with white plastic in between the moving halves , these too don't last long and must be changed on the recommended services depending on model year and engine number !

The third type came in after 2010 and has a rubber covered hydraulic tensioner , this one too has problems and must have the belt only changed at certain intervals all tensioners are changed at the 108000 cambelt service .

perhaps people can see now the dangers of having their D5 serviced at a non volvo dealer , they won't know about 3 types of tensioner , 36000 or 54000 or 108000 tensioner change intervals not to mention engine number ranges after around 2010 ...then there is teh early and current recall s ..some non volvo garages cant even get the model year right which is vital for most things of course , you CANNOT determine the model year from the number plate ! Servicing and repairing cars now is very specialised ..
.somewhere along the line the belt/tensioner is going to be missed , even some dealers don't change them UNTIL the mileage is reached ie , if you are in for a 36000 service and you have done say 25000 miles it wont be changed . others will change it . the tensioners don't fail randomly they fail after a defined known premature working life mileage .
It appears there are no engineers left capable of designing a belt tensioner anymore , all they have to do is use the volvo 240 or 850 type which were ultra high quality with needle roller fulcrum bearings with no plastic anywhere and lasted forever .

Thanks for this post. I've just phones my local dealer and fotunately mine's not one that should have recalled.

As regards the engineers' capability, it's probably more their lords and masters - the bean counters- who only allow them 2/6d for the subsequent manufacturing cost!

Commiserations mate, I feel your pain. It took me 2 months to the day to get my V70 back after a local garage cocked my timing belt change up (apparently he didn't change the tensioner when he changed the aux belt), and had to replace the engine.
I was not a happy bunny but valuable lesson learnt - stick to main dealers or indie specialists for things like this!
Hope they make a decision in your favour soon.
