If only you guys new what went on in garages, far better to get the parts and have a good indie do the job or do it yourself then you know that the oart has been changed and no labour cost

Cant believe it was just a plug and such an easy and cheap fix! Bang, rattle rattle is normally the death of any engine. Good stuff!!

Nice to hear the Garage didn't try and fleece you as well, they could easily have done so, and sadly so many do these days.

Always nice to hear the conclusion of a problem. Thanks 2stroke.
The garage must surely be worth a mention Chris

TBH, I came up trumps with the garage that fixed it. It was the same one we take our work vans to, so they recognised me from work. Anyway, it was Station Garage on Leeds Street in Liverpool. Not a Volvo specialist, but I think I'll be using them from now on!
I hate dealing with garages with a passion, think I've watched too many "Garages from Hell". Mechanic tells you it's gonna cost £350 to fix and you find yourself thinking "hmm, is it really?" I went to college as a young'un and did motorbike mechanics, so I do all my own work with bikes, but I'm not as clued up with cars. A big thank you to The Forum for all you're help, this place is well handy! |

Just to be on the safe side this morning, in light of the story told, I checked the plugs on my 2001 2.0i S40 with now 98K on the clock. The service history ended at 80K btw. What I found shocked me, the plugs had no or hardly any electrode left on them (original Volvo plugs?!!), yet the car still seemed okay , pulling well thru the revs.
Anyway a set of new NGK's later, wow what a difference, the cars pulling even smoother and starts and idles better. The only thing is I had to disconnect the plug lead sensors to change all the spark plugs, when I reconnected and started the car up the emissions light stayed on! However, a 6 mile trip out at a steady 60 mph made no difference until I switched the ignition off and then restarted, the light went out as it should! Must of reset itself I think! Anyway a 70 mile trip out the lights stayed out and the car is behaving as it should. I'm just glad I read the posts in this thread and acted.

I previously had a hesitation when getting back on the power after a gearchange. The car would cough, then pick up again. Seemed to happen at any revs in 2nd & 3rd. sometimes though, not all the time. Then my g/f told me one day that she pulled away in 1st and had her foot to the floor. No power. it'd get to 1250-1500k then stay there, regardless of what you did with the pedal. But as it never happened while I was driving it, I put it down to her being blonde. But now it's all fixed it seems. No hesistation. Just feels "like a volvo should"!!!! |

What a weird thing! Well, after I have put my NGK's in the engine manegment light came on but went off when I restarted the engine and never bothered me again... Do Volvo cars recognize non-volvo plugs or something?
