Default D5 poor starting

Hi

Maybe someone can give me some pointers of what to do next with my V70 2003 D5, apart from drop it off a cliff which is how I am feeling about it at the moment.

I have been fighting a starting problem for some months which is driving me mad.

If was fine most of last year until the winter started and then in November when it got colder it decided not to start properly.

I changed the glow plugs, air filter and relay and then it was happier for a while. Eventually a new starter made it spin over better which kept it going for the rest of the winter.

Now the problem is back and getting worse even though the weather has improved. I believe that its a fuel pressure drop in the injectors issue which means that every time its cold, it has to build up pressure in the fuel rail again to start the car. I have changed the run off pipes which were slightly perished and letting air in possibility. I have also changed the pressure relief valve with a new one. Initially I swopped that for a second hand one and it seemed to make it better so I got hold of a new relief valve. Unfortunately i feel that if anything, that has made it worse.

I havent done a run off test yet, clearly I should have before changing the pressure relief valve. I will do that this week.

The question is, if I do have a very bad result for one or more of the injectors, would that be enough to drop the fuel pressure so much that the car wont start from cold.

It is very fast once running and always starts well from warm or hot or even after a few hours of sitting. It is just the over night issue.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Do a leak back test now before you do anything else or spend any money.

If you have one faulty injector that will easily be sufficient to give you the exact symptoms that you are experiencing.

Plenty of good used injectors on ebay for around £30-40 and not a bad job at all to change .

My money is definitely on a faulty injector but out of interest when was the fuel filter changed last and if recently do you know for certain that it was ACTUALLY done rather than just paid for to be done?

Thanks for your ideas. I must admit I was told to do a leak back test before I went up the path of a faulty pressure regulator. I was told by a diesel specialist that if there was any fuel on the wrong side of the pressure regulator, it was faulty. I then looked at the pipes for the return and the run off and worked out that I had been told bull**** from what I can see because on these cars any fuel in the run off pipes would obviously get to the wrong side of the pressure reg.

Saying that, changing the pressure regulator valve has made the car fly even more that before which suggests that it was down on pressure. I guess if I have changed it and increase the pressure in the injectors, that would have improved the performance while its running but could also have finished off any weak injector causing more run off than it should have. Only a guess but seems logical to me at the moment.

I always do everything on the car myself so I know that everything has been actually done, its a real worry if people out there are still getting ripped off like that though!

So i will do the run of test and then report back.

Thanks again.

So the middle injector was leaking far more than the other four. Once a new one was fitted, the car is starting better than it every has in the 60000 miles that I have owned it for.

Pity I am now selling it!

Looks like I am leaving Volvo behind (its happened before and I normally am back within a few months)

I am going to the other side, a bmw 525i touring
