Default Name that noise #1

Hello all,

2007 XC90 V8

Over the past few weeks, I've started hearing a noise on pulling away after braking. I'd describe it as falling somewhere between a creaking and a series of 3-4 faint knocks/taps. It's not terribly loud but my perception is that it is getting worse.

It happens when I've come to a full stop (I think occaisionally I might also hear it, in some form, as the car finally comes to a complete halt) and then gently pull away. I can force it to happen 2-3 times in succession by stopping and starting off again but then mostly it will go away until I've covered some distance and then come to a halt again.

I'm aware that Volvo uses vacuum pads and all kinds of clever arrangements to mitigate engine and transmission movement but that's really the limit of my knowledge and experience.

Would anyone care to suggest likely candidate(s) and, even better, any tests which might help narrow these down?

I'll mention, in case it should have some significance, that I have also observed that when in 'Park' with the handbrake on, if I very slowly increase engine revs, then there is a profound vibration between 1400-1700 RPM and again at 2500-2700 RPM. Outside those ranges, it is as smooth as silk.

TIA

I would say it's potentially engine mounts but could literally be anything (drave shafts/cv joints/rubber bushings in suspension/subframe etc)

I did engine mounts a while back, my rear one had significantly sunk so there was excessive vibration, I had an audi a few years back and the engine mount failed causing a clicking noise when pulling away

Does the creak/knock happen if you set of very, very gently? Is it worse if you set off with strong acceleration?

If so it's possibly the front subframe moving and the bushes creaking (quite normal). The easiest cure fit some of these packed with rubber grease:

(PS the price is wrong - it should be £23.50 - also these are for the D5 might need to check they will also fit the V8)

Have a look at your driveshaft cv joints, they might be drying out particularly as the shaft to the rear axle is quite close to the exhaust.

Engine mounts. At a guess the rear engine one as it does the most work. then you have front mount. anti torque under engine, engine support by engone pulley and then the anti torque on top of engine.
