My future brother in law used to run a petrol station and informed me that the major brands put in additives that help with fuel consumption and performance whereas super markets just buy the cheapest fuel they can . Unless we have a 5p off a litre voucher we always use our local station which is Esso and they are the same price as the local supermarket .

Just got back and the computer shows an indicated average of 38.8mpg. When I've tried this before with supermarket fuel I've averaged 33mpg.

I should point out that I don't normally drive at 70 mph, but I do if wanting to see the best average mpg I can achieve.

I know the above isn't scientific but is certainly food for thought.

Should also mention mine is a 2010 185bhp Auto.
Yep, that backs up my findings also.

Just back from doing my first long trip in my XC90 185 auto. Just turnes 9000 miles.
Tank was almost empty and filled with V-Power diesel, drove from SW Scotland to Leamington Spa. Got 33.1mpg. Filled up down south putting about £79 of fuel in and got 38.3 mpg.

I will not be using anything else now but V-Power.

Wow! I expected to get a lot of replies with people telling me that V Power is just a gimmick, but it really seems to be beneficial.

Meant to add to my previous posting that the guy in the Shell station said you should not expect any improvement until your 2nd or 3rd fill. So it looks as though he was correct.

I suppose time will tell re any improvement in mpg when the car reverts back to local runs

Hmm if this is true, then my experience from one full tank, noticing absolutely no difference may have been the correct experience to have had, may try again now!

Can we expand this a little. I have been told that BP ultimate is better than Shell V-Power but is this urban legend?

I've done my own comparison with both BP Ult and Shell V on many occasions and in a few different vehicles, my conclusion was that Shell V-Power was the best. This was on the diesel side of life I'm not so sure how BP Ult rates against Shell V on petrol.
