V70 rumble noise and bad fuel smell
Hi, I’m a new member and wondered if anyone could provide any advice? I have a 58 plate V70 2.4D geartronic, completed 76,000 miles. A few weeks back it started with a rumble noise when starting engine, if a cold start it would last about 30 seconds and then the engine would return to a quieter sound, during the day on start up the rumble sound would only last a few seconds. At the same time on cold starts there would also be a very bad strong smell of fuel. It has just been on a 1200 mile round trip to Cornwall and ran like a dream but at times on the motorway it would rumble and feel as though the car was being held back then when the noise stopped the engine felt free. It was also more noticeable travelling up hills. It has spent a few days in the garage and has been checked for any air leaks, smoke test completed, looked at the injectors, compressor and there is no indication that these are the cause. Also no faults on the EGR valve. However there is still a smell of fuel and a rumble noise.
Also before all this started I noticed a whining sound from the engine when the engine was cold but as soon as the engine warmed up there would be no sound for the rest of the day. If it is a warm day there will be no whining sound from the engine at all. Since July last year it has had a new radiator, power steering pump, steering rack, throttle body, timing belts changed (water pump not required) and a new battery. Any ideas would be appreciated. |

For the fuel smell, resistance test all 5 glow plugs.
For the whining sound, check the alternator clutch pulley as that can be a symptom and it's in prime territory age wise for changing.

The rattle could well be the clutch pulley on the alternator.
Happened to mine although mine was petrol. It drove me nuts. Told the air conditioning maechanic about a strange noise and he nailed it straight away. |

Get someone else to start it and watch the aux belt. If you can see flapping it's a very strong pointer to the alternator clutch.
If nothing take the belt off and see if the noise is gone. Another candidate would be the a/c compressor clutch bearing. Typically there is a droning whine peaking at about 1200 rpm. ( 2.4 D) |
