Got it ! Took a while but the idea has finally filtered through
child bike inside car, in bits if needed
2 adult bikes on roof, pedals off, one right-way-up, other upside-down.
Will fit closer together that way. Youll need an old fashioned upside-down carrier, holds bike by saddle and bars.

further on with this
one bike facing forwards, the other backwards
strap 2 bikes together, lots of cable ties, use 1 rack
strap 1 bike to top of roof box

I'll be curious to know what you end up doing

Thomas G
great suggestions from forum members - but as it seems to be a last trip for the car, would it not be simpler just to take the 1 bike as before and simply rent 2 more bikes for the holiday? Or rent 3? Easy and more space for the trip. Then the new vehicle can be fitted with a tow bar and bike rack...

I was reading through this wondering why nobody had suggested it. Surely worth checking rental prices unless you are hardcore and need your own tricked up bikes?

I would be checking what kind of bike carrier is legal abroad, may be different regs, I would be astonished if tying a bike on top of your roofbox would not get you stopped anyway.

Best of luck with whatever you choose, Check your boot, I have roof carriers, a tie on the back one and a tow bar mounted one (bought each on to replace the last) and the original rack only fitted our Yeti as my Saab had a deep boot bottom edge so the fittings wouldn't really work safely, I used it for local trips and would not carry bikes further, bear in mind a stanley knife and your bikes and rack are lifted into the back of a van in seconds. Something to consider of the car is being left.

He says that he has built the bikes, sounds like a keen cyclist.
Why not pop into Decathlon and buy the cheapest bikes, leave thm on the campsite. Might be cheaper than renting, if rents available at all

Keen cyclist? O_O

Well... Might say so..
I used to do 8000+ miles per year, yes...
The reason I've built the bikes is that I wanted bikes that will behave like Volvo..
That is- they'll go, go, and go..
And my misus uses one on daily commute to work.
So I pretty much stripped everything, replaced what needed, adjusted all..
And maybe that's part of the reason I want these 2 with me abroad- I won't worry that something snaps, or I'll get puncture (I have kevlar lined tyres on both)..

I did think about renting, yes..
I'm waiting for reply from camping grounds- they do offer such service.
By the way- any of you been to Le Logis du Breuil?
Royan area.

Last year we've been to its counterpart- Le Logis (roughly 5 miles between them). AVOID!!
And bike hire was ridiculous.
Deposit of 120+ euro per bike.
And 30-40 hire charge per day per bike.. We're going for 10 days minimum
If I was to do that, I'd be better off looking something up on eBay over there, picking up and dumping after.

And yet.. New and frustrating (SOOO frustrating) developments are that I just "inherited" old AV setup from one of clients.
Technically, I was asked to sort trough, tell him what's needed/useful.
Which I did with absolute honesty!
Still.. decision was to get rid of most of it..

So now, being kind of audiophile myself, I've got that huuuge dilemma..
Rotel audio processor, velodyne subwoofer, PMC DB1+ speakers.. Just to mention few.
Do I keep it, or do I flog it and cover myself a third (maybe) of cost of XC70?

Its not as easy as it sounds..

Edit:

Yes, I'm bragging a bit
